On September 27, 1948, the acting mediator promised to maintain the UN mission after the murders, while a further investigation addressed responsibility for the September 17 attack.

What did the UN promise after the murders?

In his broadcast from Rhodes, Ralph Bunche pledged continued supervision, mediation and refugee relief. PAL/313 expressly dates the broadcast September 27. His endorsement of the final report was a policy of the mission, not a territorial agreement binding the parties. 1

The same statement described refugees near رام الله RAMALLAH and the city called Nablus in the source observed during an earlier journey. It documented hardship before winter rather than a new September 27 departure total.

What did the new investigation identify?

A September 27 cable transmitted a further report on the September 17 assassination. It described a planned attack on the mediator and UN authority in territory controlled by מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL, and reproduced the foreign minister’s attribution to the Fatherland Front as an arm of לח״י LEḤI. The assassination study now links this later evidence to the original occurrence. Security responsibility and proof of individual guilt remain different questions. 2

How is this dated?

This is the civil-date recap for 1948-09-27, Day 303 of the 599-day series. TJD uses the register’s Hebcal civil-day conversion without its after-sunset option. Its daytime public route is כ״ג באלול ה׳תש״ח 23rd 𝑜𝑓 Elul, AM 5708. 3 The civil slot continues after sunset on כ״ד באלול ה׳תש״ח 24th 𝑜𝑓 Elul, AM 5708; the recap’s route does not establish the occurrence date of each item. Broadcast, conversation, attack, death, document, receipt and publication dates are distinguished above. Unknown hours remain unknown. Later investigations and cumulative figures are not new attacks or deaths.

Guided reflections

  • Why did the acting mediator endorse recommendations that the parties had not accepted?
  • How did his earlier refugee observations support his winter-relief appeal?
