On October 1, 1948, competing claims to sovereignty took documentary form, the provisional state welcomed its president and received a budget proposal, and Egyptian forces attacked a position protecting the southern supply route.

What did the council at עזה AZA declare?

The proclamation study follows the October 1 Arabic proceedings: a whole-country state claim, provisional constitutional measures and a collective conspiracy accusation against יהודים YEHUDIM. The adopted text supports identifying both antizionism and Jew-hatred in those particular resolutions. Effective rule, loan receipts and rights implementation remain separate questions. 1

How did the state receive its president and budget?

חיים ויצמן ḤAYIM WEIZMANN arrived from the Swiss Confederation and received the council’s welcome. His homecoming study distinguishes the arrival from the reported ceremony twelve hours later. In a separate dispatch, אליעזר קפלן ELIʾEZER KAPLAN submitted a proposed six-month budget of 7,800,000 pounds excluding special security appropriations. The proposal was neither the war’s full cost nor an audited spending total. 2 3

Why did the fighting threaten the supply route?

The Hebrew institutional history dates an Egyptian assault on חירבת מחאז ḤIRBAT MAḤAZ to late on October 1. Defenders of פלמ״ח PALMAḤ withdrew after their commander was wounded and a deputy killed. The battle study follows the position’s role in protecting the air-supply route to the נגב NEGEV. The unnamed deputy is not counted as a verified additional fatality without an individual record. 4

PAL/322 also published relief information that day. Its account of the September 30 food-truck departure is earlier reportage, while blankets and further deliveries remained prospective. 5

How is this dated?

This is the civil-date recap for 1948-10-01, Day 307 of the 599-day series. TJD uses the register’s Hebcal civil-day conversion without its after-sunset option. Its daytime public route is כ״ז באלול ה׳תש״ח 27th 𝑜𝑓 Elul, AM 5708. 6 The civil slot continues after sunset on כ״ח באלול ה׳תש״ח 28th 𝑜𝑓 Elul, AM 5708; the recap’s route does not establish the occurrence date of each item. Broadcast, conversation, attack, death, document, receipt and publication dates are distinguished above. Unknown hours remain unknown. Later investigations and cumulative figures are not new attacks or deaths. The afternoon-to-evening attack and the council reception twelve hours after arrival raise separate sunset boundaries.

Guided reflections

  • How did the council at עזה AZA’s adopted resolutions differ from its diplomatic professions?
  • What do a proposed budget and a presidential reception reveal about wartime institutions?
