On October 2, 1948, the struggle for the supply route continued, a young squad commander’s death was recorded, and American files documented receipt and rejection of the government at עזה AZA’s diplomatic claim.

What did the Hebrew account resolve?

The institutional history dates the counterattack order at חירבת מחאז ḤIRBAT MAḤAZ to October 2, explicitly directing action that night. This resolves the English page’s 2.1.48 typo but leaves the precise overnight occurrence uncertain. The battle study retains that distinction. 1

יהונתן לווינזון YEHONATAN LEVINSON’s memorial in the same institutional collection pairs October 2 with כ״ח באלול ה׳תש״ח 28th 𝑜𝑓 Elul, AM 5708. He was nineteen, a squad commander and youth instructor. His parents were יוסף YOSEF and מינה MINA. A named memorial is more specific than a narrative’s unnamed casualty; it does not establish that he was the deputy described as killed the day before. 2

What did Washington receive and instruct?

An undated message from أحمد حلمي AḤMAD ḤILMI requesting friendly relations reached Washington on October 2 at 12:53 p.m. Receipt supplies this day’s date, not the letter’s signing date. A separate confidential circular issued at 01:00 instructed American diplomats to discourage support for the new government and invoked its association with أمين الحسيني AMIN AL-ḤUSAYNI. Neither file records American recognition. 3 4

How did the prime minister describe independence?

Klir’s October 3 entry says דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION broadcast the preceding evening, placing the reported address on October 2. He linked independence to the community’s own agency, recognized diplomatic representation, rebuilding and immigration. This is an edited 1952 reproduction rather than the original broadcast transcript. Its selected wording emphasizes the change in diplomatic standing:

ᴏʀɪɢɪɴᴀʟ:

כנציגים שווי זכויות של מדינה עצמאית 5

ᴛʀᴀɴꜱʟᴀᴛɪᴏɴ:

as equal representatives of an independent state 6

How is this dated?

This is the civil-date recap for 1948-10-02, Day 308 of the 599-day series. TJD uses the register’s Hebcal civil-day conversion without its after-sunset option. Its daytime public route is כ״ח באלול ה׳תש״ח 28th 𝑜𝑓 Elul, AM 5708. 7 The civil slot continues after sunset on כ״ט באלול ה׳תש״ח 29th 𝑜𝑓 Elul, AM 5708; the recap’s route does not establish the occurrence date of each item. Broadcast, conversation, attack, death, document, receipt and publication dates are distinguished above. Unknown hours remain unknown. Later investigations and cumulative figures are not new attacks or deaths. The Hebrew counterattack order resolves the English typo but not the precise overnight start; the memorial gives a source-given death date.

Guided reflections

  • How does the Hebrew counterattack order correct the English page without settling the overnight timing?
  • Why should a named memorial be distinguished from an unnamed casualty in a battle narrative?
