On 17 Kislev 5708, two buses carrying passengers who were יהודים YEHUDIM toward ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM were attacked near Fajja by Palestinian Arab gunmen. Six people appear to have been killed on the day. Dvora Yaari Wald survived the attack but died from her wounds on 23 Kislev; her death is recorded separately at event://5708־09־23־dvora־yaari־wald־died. The two immediate attacks and the later death must not be collapsed into one same-day toll.1
Nechama (Natka) Zlatovski Hakohen was killed while returning to her ההגנה HAʾHAGANA medical-service post at Hadassah Hospital. Her Ministry of Defense memorial says she left Binyamina at dawn because she expected disturbances in ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM and believed she should return to her duty. It records: “נפלה ביום י״ז בכסלו תש״ח” (“She fell on 17 Kislev 5708”). The English is TJD's translation, checked against the Hebrew memorial.2
The JTA report issued the next day carried a headline saying six יהודים YEHUDIM had been killed and also described violence beyond the buses. It is contemporary reportage, but its aggregate headline is not a passenger list or a final bus-only casualty count.3
Eli Alon's later reconstruction names five people killed on the Netanya bus—Esther Weiss, Hirsch Stark, Shalom Yaari Wald, Chaya Israeli, and Shoshana Mizrahi Tehrani—and Nechama on the Hadera bus. Shoshana was traveling to ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM to marry. Shalom died while helping his injured wife Dvora, who died six days later. These person-level details make the loss legible, but the original death certificates, hospital files, and police investigation have not been checked.4
The United Nations General Assembly had recommended partition the previous day. Resolution 181 recommended a plan for states for יהודים YEHUDIM and Arabs and a special international regime for ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM; it did not declare Israeli independence or instantly create either proposed state.5
The bus ambushes are a conventional opening marker for the war's main phase, not proof that armed violence between Arabs and יהודים YEHUDIM began on 30 November. A New York Herald Tribune report published on 21 November described four members of the Shubaki family killed near Ra'anana the previous day and attributed suspicion to members of the Stern Group. The report establishes an earlier violent incident and an attribution, not a proven identity or motive for its perpetrators.6
What do the casualty records establish?
The available reconstruction supports six same-day deaths in the two bus attacks and a seventh eventual death when Dvora died of her wounds. The JTA's first report counted five bus deaths and a separate killing near יפו YAFO, showing why its headline cannot replace the named victim record. The original police and hospital casualty records and the attackers' unit or command remain unchecked. No specific motive or command structure should be inferred from the date's proximity to the partition vote alone.7
How is this dated?
The Ministry of Defense memorial dates Nechama's death to 17 Kislev 5708 and 30 November 1947. The bus attacks are also placed on 30 November by the later reconstruction. The daytime civil date converts to 17 Kislev. Dvora's memorial gives her death as 6 December, 23 Kislev; that later date remains distinct from the attack date.8
Guided reflections
- What changes when a casualty count distinguishes the six same-day deaths from Dvora's later death of wounds?
- Which police, hospital, or burial records could identify the full passenger list and casualty sequence?
