The three-day strike began as violence reached the commercial center of ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM. Shops belonging to יהודים YEHUDIM were attacked, and הארגון HAʾIRGUN members also burned a cinema that served mixed audiences.

What began with the strike?

On 19 Kislev 5708, the Arab Higher Committee's three-day strike against the United Nations partition recommendation began across British-ruled ארץ ישראל EREẒ YISRAʾEL. It was organized opposition to sovereignty by יהודים YEHUDIM in their homeland. The committee also called for an economic boycott of יהודים YEHUDIM; the surviving English-language dispatch establishes that the boycott was publicly reported, while its original Arabic directive has not been inspected.1

What happened to shops in ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM?

On 19 Kislev 5708, rioters attacked shops and property owned by יהודים YEHUDIM in ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM's commercial center. The English Empire's Colonial Secretary told the House of Commons the next day that the High Commissioner's incomplete reports described “mob violence directed against Jews and Jewish property.” He also reported looting and arson while characterizing the disturbances as sporadic and unorganised.2 The statement directly supports the targeting of יהודים YEHUDIM; its own assessment limits what can be said about coordination.

דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION's same-day diary records that shops were burned, traffic on the ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM–תל אביב TEL AVIV road was stopped, and leaders of יהודים YEHUDIM were weighing whether to halt travel until protection could be arranged.3 The diary documents Ben-Gurion's record and the decisions before him; it is not an eyewitness statement about every attack.

Who burned the Rex Cinema?

During Kislev 5708, five הארגון HAʾIRGUN members entered and burned the Rex Cinema in ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM while Arab rioters attacked nearby shops owned by יהודים YEHUDIM. The cinema's Arab-Christian owner, Joseph Pascal Albina, had a business partner who was a יהודי YEHUDI, and its audience included Arabs, יהודים YEHUDIM, and English Empire personnel. Its destruction was an attack on a civilian cultural venue with ties across the city's communities, even if its perpetrators saw it as retaliation for the riot against יהודים YEHUDIM.4

The focused source discussion is retained in event://5708־09־Dd־rex־cinema־burned. Its event date and this daily article’s civil-day route are not automatically the same.

How is this dated?

This is Day 3 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1947-12-02. Its OTD route, 5708-09-19, is the daytime fixed-Hebrew conversion of that civil date, not a claim that every action mentioned here occurred before sunset.5 The adjacent Hebrew date after local sunset is 20 Kislev 5708 (5708-09-20). The strike and commercial-center attacks are dated to civil 2 December by contemporary reports. The Rex Cinema burned during that unrest, but its precise hour and Hebrew sunset side have not been established; its separate Event study retains month precision. Newspaper issue dates, dispatch dates and later testimony are kept distinct from occurrence dates.
