On 19 Kislev 5708, rioters attacked shops and property owned by יהודים YEHUDIM in ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM's commercial center. The English Empire's Colonial Secretary told the House of Commons the next day that the High Commissioner's incomplete reports described “mob violence directed against Jews and Jewish property.” He also reported looting and arson while characterizing the disturbances as sporadic and unorganised.1 The statement directly supports the targeting of יהודים YEHUDIM; its own assessment limits what can be said about coordination.
דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION's same-day diary records that shops were burned, traffic on the ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM–תל אביב TEL AVIV road was stopped, and leaders of יהודים YEHUDIM were weighing whether to halt travel until protection could be arranged.2 The diary documents Ben-Gurion's record and the decisions before him; it is not an eyewitness statement about every attack.
These sources establish violence targeting יהודים YEHUDIM and the state's contemporaneous acknowledgement of it. Ben-Gurion's complaints that police failed to protect shops are not, without police orders or logs, proof that the English Empire deliberately permitted their destruction.
How is this dated?
Both Ben-Gurion's diary and the High Commissioner's report date the ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM disturbances to 2 December 1947. Daytime conversion gives 19 Kislev 5708. The parliamentary statement was made on 3 December; that later reporting date is kept distinct from the violence it describes.3
Guided reflections
- What does the British official report establish about whom the violence targeted, and where does its incomplete reporting limit the account?
- What would distinguish deliberate police inaction from a failure to control a rapidly unfolding attack?
