In the first week after partition, הארגון HAʾIRGUN fighters entered Abu Kabir, a mostly Arab neighborhood adjoining southern תל אביב TEL AVIV, and set buildings on fire. The act belonged to the widening armed conflict around יפו YAFO, but it was an attack by הארגון HAʾIRGUN on an Arab residential area, not simply defense of homes of יהודים YEHUDIM. Contemporary reporting and later reconstructions agree that an הארגון HAʾIRGUN raid occurred; they disagree about the exact day and some of its consequences.1
What can be established about the raid?
Radai dates an הארגון HAʾIRGUN attack and the burning of some Abu Kabir dwellings to 7 December. He draws on Haganah, הארגון HAʾIRGUN, and contemporary press material. A separate Israeli military-heritage reconstruction assigns the raid to 6 December and describes about fifteen fighters traveling on a truck, arson, and gunfire with pursuing English Empire police. Its related entry gives a conflicting 8 December metadata date while describing 6 December in its text. The conflicting accounts may reflect distinct actions or later dating errors; the original operational record is needed to decide.2
One later account reports a bomb thrown into an Arab café and gives one dead and sixteen wounded. Its date conflict, the lack of named victims, and the absence of an inspected police report prevent those numbers from becoming a verified casualty roll. The same caution applies to a later transcription of a 7 December Davar headline asking whether two הארגון HAʾIRGUN fighters were killed: a question in a headline does not establish their deaths.3
Did the fire displace residents?
Radai documents early movement from neighborhoods along the יפו YAFO–תל אביב TEL AVIV boundary, including Abu Kabir, under the pressure of fighting and arson. That regional finding does not yield a count of people who left because of this raid. A Davar passage reproduced later reports families leaving toward Ramla and Lydda, but the original newspaper page, households, departure times, and causes have not been checked. The evidence supports danger to Arab civilians and reported movement; it does not establish a particular evacuation order, expulsion, or denial of return in this incident.4
How is this dated?
The competing civil dates are 6 and 7 December 1947; one metadata field gives 8 December. Even the account assigning about 17:00 on 6 December leaves a local sunset question. This article therefore retains Kislev 5708 without an exact Hebrew day. The date of Davar's 7 December issue is a publication date, not proof of the raid's event date.5
Guided reflections
- Why must an הארגון HAʾIRGUN raid on Arab homes be recorded separately from attacks on neighboring homes of יהודים YEHUDIM?
- Which original records could distinguish one raid from several actions reported under the same place name?
