Institutions of יהודים YEHUDIM discussed aid for families of defenders killed in the fighting. After dark on the same civil date, הפלמ״ח HAʾPALMAḤ fighters attacked al-Khisas and killed villagers, including children; the after-sunset operation belongs to the following Hebrew day.

What assistance was proposed for defenders' families?

On 18 December 1947, דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION's diary records a Defense Committee discussion of support for families of defenders killed in the fighting. The committee decided that a family whose deceased member had supported dependents could receive up to P£300. The amount is a ceiling in a recorded decision, not proof that any named family had yet received money.1

דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION argued that responsibility for dependents, wounded defenders and people left disabled should not rest solely on the military budget. A committee was to formulate a wider insurance and assistance scheme. The diary documents an institutional attempt to make care for the bereaved and wounded part of organized defense of יהודים YEHUDIM, not a complete account of later policy or its financing.

The decision should be read alongside the earlier convoy deaths and continuing attacks on settlements. Those deaths explain the urgency, but this article does not use a P£300 maximum to infer how many people were killed, how many families qualified, or what any particular household received.

What happened at al-Khisas after dark?

On the civil night of 18 December 1947, fighters of הפלמ״ח HAʾPALMAḤ raided al-Khisas in the northern Hula Valley and the nearby mansion of Emir Fa'ur. Historian Benny Morris writes that commander Yigal Allon approved the operation, apparently without ההגנה HAʾHAGANA General Staff approval, despite opposition from local leaders who feared it would ignite a comparatively quiet area. The raiders' reported rationale was retaliation for attacks on יהודים YEHUDIM nearby; that rationale does not establish that the people killed in their homes had attacked anyone.2

Morris describes three men, one woman and four children killed in one village house, and four men killed at the mansion: twelve people across two sites in his reconstruction. An attributed War Office incident report gave about ten deaths, including five children; an Israeli historical map gives approximately eight village deaths, including two children. These are differing accounts and geographic scopes, not values to average or add. They support the conclusion that the Palmach killed Palestinian civilians, including children, while leaving the precise roll unsettled.3

How is this dated?

This is Day 19 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1947-12-18. Its OTD route, 5708-10-05, is the daytime fixed-Hebrew conversion of that civil date, not a claim that every action mentioned here occurred before sunset.4 The adjacent Hebrew date after local sunset is 6 Tevet 5708 (5708-10-06). The Defense Committee discussion appears in Ben-Gurion's diary dated 18 December without a recorded hour, so 5 Tevet is a provisional daytime conversion. The al-Khisas raid began after civil sunset and is dated to 6 Tevet in its own study. Later departure from the village and later expulsion require separate evidence. Newspaper issue dates, dispatch dates and later testimony are kept distinct from occurrence dates.
