A local truce involving location://Holon and neighboring Arab villages failed amid renewed fighting. Leaders of יהודים YEHUDIM also discussed emergency medical organization and a more offensive defense, neither of which can be treated as a completed policy simply because it was proposed.

Why did the location://Holon arrangement fail?

A JTA bulletin issued on 19 December 1947 reported that a English Empire district commissioner had helped negotiate a local arrangement the previous day between Holon and neighboring Arab villages. The arrangement reportedly allowed older and sick Arab civilians to leave and permitted residents who were יהודים YEHUDIM to search for a body. Local leaders were said to have agreed to extend it.1

According to the same bulletin, sniper fire killed one person who was one of יהודים YEHUDIM and wounded another on the morning of 19 December, ending the local ceasefire. The news report establishes what was reported, but neither the dead person's identity nor the gunmen's orders have been verified in police or hospital records. The reported evacuation permission does not establish how many people left or whether any departure was compulsory.

This was a local, short-lived security arrangement under the Mandate. It is not one of the formal international truces of 1948 and does not belong in the later Truces and Armistices chronology. The original agreement and district commissioner's account remain the next evidence needed to test its terms and breakdown.

What emergency care was planned?

At 10:00 on 19 December 1947, doctors and medical leaders met דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION. His diary identifies a State-of-Emergency Medical Committee and regional doctors selected to coordinate services. Representatives included Meshulam Levontin, Yosef Meir and Avraham Katznelson. This was institutional preparation for the wounded and for the civilian health needs of communities under attack, undertaken before independence.2

The diary records a plan to add 500 beds in existing hospitals, build reserve surgical teams, and acquire equipment. It gives P£76,600 as a need and distinguishes promised funds from money still lacking. It also says that more than one hundred people were already wounded. These are the committee's contemporary planning figures, not proof that 500 beds had been installed or an audited cumulative casualty total.

What did offensive defense mean in the diary?

On 19 December 1947, דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION recorded telling Yohanan Ratner and Shalom Eshet that a response delivered only after an attack might fail and might itself be read as escalation. In the archive's edited English translation, he proposed offensive defense and a decisive blow against the place from which an attack originated. The proposed effects included destroying or capturing a locality or causing residents to flee.3

The focused source discussion is retained in דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION proposed a more offensive defense policy.. Its event date and this daily article’s civil-day route are not automatically the same.

How is this dated?

This is Day 20 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1947-12-19. Its OTD route, 5708-10-06, is the daytime fixed-Hebrew conversion of that civil date, not a claim that every action mentioned here occurred before sunset.4 The adjacent Hebrew date after local sunset is 7 Tevet 5708 (5708-10-07). The JTA report issued 19 December describes the Holon arrangement made the previous day and its breakdown; publication and negotiation dates differ. Ben-Gurion's dated diary records the medical and defense discussions; the medical meeting is reported at about 10:00, supporting 6 Tevet. The al-Khisas raid of the prior civil night is also 6 Tevet after sunset. Newspaper issue dates, dispatch dates and later testimony are kept distinct from occurrence dates.

  • Which event or report fixes the date of this day’s main account?
  • What record would resolve the most important remaining timing or casualty question?
