Armed יהודים YEHUDIM raided the Arab village of location://Qazaza in the first hours of the civil day. Later that evening Max Schneider was killed on a road used by יהודים YEHUDIM; his timed death crossed into the next Hebrew day.

What happened at location://Qazaza?

In the first hours of 20 December 1947, armed יהודים YEHUDIM raided location://Qazaza, an Arab village in ארץ ישראל EREẒ YISRAʾEL. Walid Khalidi’s village account says one resident was killed and two were wounded and attributes the count to contemporary press and police reporting. The supplied research has not reached the original police file or the exact newspaper columns. The raid and the civilian harm are material to this phase of the war even though the names of the participants remain uncertain. 1

The reports published on 21 December describe the previous night’s action. Their issue date cannot move the occurrence forward. The material available for this article does not establish an order that residents leave, a complete village evacuation, expulsion, or denial of return. The village’s later 1948 history requires its own event record. This article therefore records the attack and its reported immediate losses, not the village’s whole wartime fate.

This operation by יהודים YEHUDIM belongs in the Under the Mandate chronology alongside attacks against יהודים YEHUDIM. Separating the actor and victims makes the record stronger than a narrative in which all violence moved in one direction.

What happened to מקס שניידר MAX SCHNEIDER that evening?

מקס שניידר MAX SCHNEIDER was killed in a road attack at about 20:30 on 20 December 1947. His official memorial identifies his wife Miriam and supplies the hour. The killing belongs to the danger on roads used by יהודים YEHUDIM in ארץ ישראל EREẒ YISRAʾEL during the Mandate’s final months; the available record does not identify each gunman or justify a claim that Schneider was the last surviving member of a Holocaust family. 2

The focused source discussion is retained in Murder of מקס שניידר MAX SCHNEIDER.. Its event date and this daily article’s civil-day route are not automatically the same.

How is this dated?

This is Day 21 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1947-12-20. Its OTD route, 5708-10-07, is the daytime fixed-Hebrew conversion of that civil date, not a claim that every action mentioned here occurred before sunset.3 The adjacent Hebrew date after local sunset is 8 Tevet 5708 (5708-10-08). The Qazaza raid is placed in the first hours of civil 20 December, corresponding to 7 Tevet. Schneider's memorial gives about 20:30 on 20 December, after local sunset, so his Hebrew event date is 8 Tevet. The two occurrences belong to one civil-day account but different Hebrew event dates. Newspaper issue dates, dispatch dates and later testimony are kept distinct from occurrence dates.

Guided reflections

  • Which event or report fixes the date of this day’s main account?
  • What record would resolve the most important remaining timing or casualty question?
