Hans Beyth, a Youth Aliyah leader, was killed in a road attack. His death affected an institution of יהודים YEHUDIM responsible for children trying to rebuild their lives in ארץ ישראל EREẒ YISRAʾEL after persecution and war.

What happened to האנס בייט HANS BEYTH?

האנס בייט HANS BEYTH was killed in a road attack on 26 December 1947. His Ministry of Defense memorial identifies him as a Youth Aliyah leader and assigns 13 Tevet. The attack removed a person helping children of יהודים YEHUDIM reach safety and rebuild their lives in ארץ ישראל EREẒ YISRAʾEL. The memorial supports his death and institutional role; a complete convoy manifest and police investigation have not been reviewed here. 1

The official Hebrew memorial’s dated formula reads:

נפל ביום י"ג בטבת תש"ח2

TJD translation: Fell on 13 Tevet 5708. The formula establishes the memorial’s assigned day; the hour still needs a timed incident record.

Contemporary reports of violence around the same time describe convoys carrying leaders of יהודים YEHUDIM. A later report date is not evidence of another killing of Beyth. Nor does Beyth’s humanitarian work establish that every child in his care was in the vehicle or injured during the attack.

How is this dated?

This is Day 27 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1947-12-26. Its OTD route, 5708-10-13, is the daytime fixed-Hebrew conversion of that civil date, not a claim that every action mentioned here occurred before sunset.3 The adjacent Hebrew date after local sunset is 14 Tevet 5708 (5708-10-14). Beyth's Ministry of Defense memorial assigns his death to civil 26 December, 13 Tevet. A timed convoy log and police investigation have not been inspected. Other nearby deaths reported later must not be added to his incident from publication dates alone. Newspaper issue dates, dispatch dates and later testimony are kept distinct from occurrence dates.

Guided reflections

  • Which event or report fixes the date of this day’s main account?
  • What record would resolve the most important remaining timing or casualty question?
