לח״י LEḤI gunmen attacked a coffeehouse in the Arab village of location://Lifta. A doctor and another member of the community of יהודים YEHUDIM also died in separate incidents; their named memorials must not be rolled into the coffeehouse toll.
What happened at the location://Lifta coffeehouse?
On 28 December 1947, לח״י LEḤI gunmen attacked a coffeehouse in the Arab village of location://Lifta. Khalidi’s village study cites contemporary and later accounts reporting five or six people killed and seven wounded. The conflict in the death count should remain visible until names, hospital records and original issue pages can be compared. 1
A coffeehouse is a civilian gathering place. The available source set does not establish that all those inside were armed fighters. The operation was carried out by לח״י LEḤI, a distinct underground organization of יהודים YEHUDIM; it should not be silently attributed to the ההגנה HAʾHAGANA or Jewish Agency.
There had been reports of departures from location://Lifta before this raid, including an earlier order to send women and children away. Later movement following the raid cannot all be attributed to this one attack, and the current evidence does not establish for each household whether it fled fighting, complied with an evacuation instruction, was expelled, or was later denied return. Those are different claims requiring their own records.

What happened to הוגו להרס HUGO LEHRS?
Dr. הוגו להרס HUGO LEHRS was killed at the government hospital in location://BeitSafafa on 28 December 1947, according to his official memorial. The Ministry of Defense memorial identifies him as a physician and records his death date. His profession matters to a community of יהודים YEHUDIM organizing emergency care amid attacks: a doctor’s death is both a family loss and a loss of service. The available accounts differ over the manner and setting of the killing, so this article does not choose one unsupported reconstruction. 2
The Ministry of Defense memorial describes the killing in Hebrew:
When did אברהם דב זינגר AVRAHAM DOV ZINGER die?
אברהם דב זינגר AVRAHAM DOV ZINGER was stabbed on 27 December 1947 and died of his wounds on 28 December. His official memorial separates the assault date from the death date and identifies him as an only child. That family fact expresses the weight of his loss, but it does not mean that he was the last surviving member of a family destroyed in the Holocaust. 3
The focused source discussion is retained in Death from wounds of אברהם דב זינגר AVRAHAM DOV ZINGER.. Its event date and this daily article’s civil-day route are not automatically the same.
How is this dated?
This is Day 29 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1947-12-28. Its OTD route, 5708-10-15, is the daytime fixed-Hebrew conversion of that civil date, not a claim that every action mentioned here occurred before sunset.4 The adjacent Hebrew date after local sunset is 16 Tevet 5708 (5708-10-16). The Lifta attack is civil-dated 28 December in Khalidi's village history, but the hour and exact Hebrew sunset side are unresolved. Individual memorials place Lehrs's and Zinger's deaths on 15 Tevet; Zinger was stabbed on 27 December and died of those wounds on 28 December. Newspaper issue dates, dispatch dates and later testimony are kept distinct from occurrence dates.
