הארגון HAʾIRGUN bombed a crowded market by location://DamascusGate, killing civilians according to contemporary reports. Other armed actions in ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM and at a British arms depot must be distinguished from the initial explosion and from one another.
What happened at location://DamascusGate?
A United Press report printed on 29 December 1947 describes an הארגון HAʾIRGUN bomb exploding near location://DamascusGate that day. A United Press report printed that day counted fifteen dead across the bombing and ensuing violence: twelve Arabs, including women and a child, two British constables and one attacker. The report’s aggregate is not a count of people killed by the bomb alone. 1
JTA’s 30 December account gives eleven Arabs killed and thirty-two wounded and reports הארגון HAʾIRGUN responsibility. Different contemporary counts must be kept as claims from their respective reporting channels. They cannot be added to each other or silently harmonized. The original police incident list, hospital records and הארגון HAʾIRGUN communication are needed for a person-level tally. 2
The victims include civilians in a crowded urban place. הארגון HAʾIRGUN’s action was its own operation; the contemporary dispute over joint command means it cannot simply be labeled a ההגנה HAʾHAGANA or הסוכנות היהודית HAʾSOḪNUT HAʾYEHUDIT order.

Who was killed in location://Romema?
JTA reported that ההגנה HAʾHAGANA fighters entered a house in location://Romema around 29 December 1947 and killed a local mukhtar and two of his sons. The report describes a search for men accused of attacks on areas inhabited by יהודים YEHUDIM. That accusation is evidence of the attackers’ stated or reported purpose, not independent proof that each person killed had taken part in those attacks. 3
The focused source discussion is retained in ההגנה HAʾHAGANA killed a mukhtar and his sons in location://Romema.. Its event date and this daily article’s civil-day route are not automatically the same.
What happened at location://TelLitvinsky?
הפלמ״ח HAʾPALMAḤ histories describe an arms raid at location://TelLitvinsky on the night of 29 December 1947
. One account lists seventy-five rifles and seven Sten guns; a United Press report gives a rougher figure of about one hundred weapons. These are not independent inventories of different seizures. The original operation log and British stores register would establish what was actually taken. 4 5

What did the leadership say about joint command?
On 29 December 1947, דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION discussed a reported agreement between ההגנה HAʾHAGANA and הארגון HAʾIRGUN. His diary’s edited English translation ends the discussion: Therefore, as of now, there’s no agreement.
He wanted the independent organizations to stop unauthorized acts, including threats and attacks against British personnel or יהודים YEHUDIM, before entering a settled command structure.6
The focused source discussion is retained in דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION said command talks with הארגון HAʾIRGUN had not produced agreement.. Its event date and this daily article’s civil-day route are not automatically the same.
How is this dated?
This is Day 30 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1947-12-29. Its OTD route, 5708-10-16, is the daytime fixed-Hebrew conversion of that civil date, not a claim that every action mentioned here occurred before sunset.7 The adjacent Hebrew date after local sunset is 17 Tevet 5708 (5708-10-17). United Press printed a same-day 29 December report describing the Damascus Gate explosion as occurring that day; a JTA report dated 30 December also says today
, a material date conflict. The original police log and explosion hour remain missing. The Tel Litvinsky accounts place the raid during the night around 29 December; its exact hour and Hebrew sunset boundary remain unresolved. Newspaper issue dates, dispatch dates and later testimony are kept distinct from occurrence dates.
