A crowd killed thirty-nine employees who were יהודים YEHUDIM inside the oil refinery in חיפה HAIFA on 30 December 1947. Earlier that day, הארגון HAʾIRGUN grenades had struck Arab workers outside. The first attack was a real and essential part of the sequence. It did not make the employees who were יהודים YEHUDIM responsible for it or turn their murder into an act of self-defense.

How did the killings unfold?

JTA's first account described workers beaten, stabbed and dragged from places where they had sought shelter. British troops eventually dispersed the crowd and surviving employees who were יהודים YEHUDIM were escorted away. Its 31 December headline counted forty-one dead יהודים YEHUDIM; later records consistently count thirty-nine. The headline's early figure must not be added as two extra victims.

The bulletin's wording identifies a breach of refuge inside the workplace. It cannot establish the individual perpetrator of each killing or a complete roster of victims.1

Who was among the dead?

David Emmanuel Mahalal was a civil engineer at the refinery, born in Alexandria to Sarah Rivka and Israel Natan Mahalal. The Ministry of Defense memorial records his marriage to Batya Cohen, membership in ההגנה HAʾHAGANA, death on 30 December and burial on 31 December. His life was not reducible to a workplace casualty statistic. This record does not say he was the last survivor of a Holocaust-murdered family.2

Who resisted the killing?

Benny Morris, drawing in part on a later inquiry by יהודים YEHUDIM, records that some Arab employees protected coworkers who were יהודים YEHUDIM and British personnel helped save others. The original January 1948 investigating committee file, CZA S25-4037, has not been inspected here. The later account nonetheless identifies conduct within the refinery that differed from the murderers' conduct. It is a reason to identify participants precisely, not to diminish the massacre.3

The preceding grenade attack is studied separately at הארגון HAʾIRGUN attacked Arab workers outside the refinery in חיפה HAIFA.. Day 31 brings the two events together without merging their victims or perpetrators: event://5708־10־17־independence־war־day־031.

How is this dated?

The violence followed a grenade attack during the refinery working day on 30 December 1947, corresponding to daytime 17 Tevet 5708. JTA reported it in its 31 December bulletin. Mahalal's memorial separately gives 30 December as his death date. The issue date is not an additional day of massacre; the final individual death list and exact hours remain to be compared with refinery and police records.4 5

Guided reflections

  • What responsibility belongs to the crowd that killed coworkers who had not thrown the grenades?
  • How do accounts of workers who protected colleagues sharpen the assignment of responsibility?
