Two attacks at the oil refinery in חיפה HAIFA transformed a workplace into a killing ground. הארגון HAʾIRGUN first attacked Arab workers outside; participants in an Arab crowd then murdered employees who were יהודים YEHUDIM inside. The sequence matters, but neither group of workers was responsible for the other attack.
What happened outside the refinery?
Contemporary JTA reporting says הארגון HAʾIRGUN men threw grenades from a passing vehicle at Arab laborers gathered outside the refinery. Its 31 December bulletin reported six Arab deaths and more than forty wounded; Benny Morris later gave eleven dead. Those are competing totals for the same attack, not two sets of victims. The individual death records have not been reconciled.1 2
The initial attack has its own study at הארגון HAʾIRGUN attacked Arab workers outside the refinery in חיפה HAIFA..
How were the refinery workers murdered?
After the grenades exploded, a crowd attacked employees who were יהודים YEHUDIM within the refinery. The later accepted count is thirty-nine murdered יהודים YEHUDIM. JTA's first headline counted forty-one; it is an early estimate, not evidence of two additional deaths. Some workers sought shelter in offices. Morris also records Arab and British employees who protected coworkers who were יהודים YEHUDIM, an important limit on collective blame.3 4
David Emmanuel Mahalal, an engineer, husband and member of ההגנה HAʾHAGANA, was among the dead. His Ministry of Defense memorial gives his death as 30 December and burial the next day. The full account of the massacre is at event://5708־10־17־חיפה־refinery־massacre HAIFA.5
How is this dated?
This is Day 31 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1947-12-30. Its public Ivrit route is 5708-10-17; after local sunset the adjacent Hebrew route is 5708-10-18.
The attacks occurred during the working day on 30 December 1947, so the daytime conversion to 17 Tevet 5708 is consistent with the reported timing. The JTA archive bulletin bears 31 December and uses today
, while Mahalal’s memorial gives 30 December as his death date; the original dispatch timestamp should be checked. The working event date follows the later dated reconstruction and memorial, not the bulletin issue date alone. The route does not settle disputed casualty figures. 6
Guided reflections
- What does the order of the two attacks explain without excusing either one?
- Why do the workers who protected colleagues matter when assigning responsibility?
