After the massacre of thirty-nine workers who were יהודים YEHUDIM in חיפה HAIFA, ההגנה HAʾHAGANA prepared and began a retaliatory raid against Balad al-Shaykh and neighboring Hawassa. The operation crossed the civil and Hebrew date boundaries and must be counted as one attack, including when its consequences appear in Day 33.
Why were these communities targeted?
ההגנה HAʾHAGANA accounts described retaliation for the refinery killings; a later intelligence report identified three villagers as participants. That allegation can explain target selection, but it cannot transfer guilt to everyone living in either community. Later histories describe orders to harm adult men and destroy property while avoiding women and children. The reported outcome included civilian victims, including women and children.1 2

What can the first casualty reports establish?
JTA's 2 January bulletin relayed a British police count of at least four Arab dead and more than thirty wounded, while saying ההגנה HAʾHAGANA estimates were higher. It named Haim Bendor and Yochanan Zelinger as member of ההגנה HAʾHAGANAs who had not returned. Later estimates of Palestinian deaths vary sharply, partly because some cover Balad al-Shaykh alone and others include Hawassa. None of these figures should be added together.3 4
What happened to the ships carrying יהודים YEHUDIM?
British soldiers boarded the Pan York and Pan Crescent at 15:00 on 31 December, according to Hillel Yarkoni's later voyage history. The ships had encountered British warships earlier, and their passengers had embarked before this date. The two ships reached Cyprus on 1 January, where disembarkation into detention began. This was a separate exercise of British authority over immigration of יהודים YEHUDIM while fighting expanded near חיפה HAIFA. How is this dated?
This is Day 32 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1947-12-31. Its public Ivrit route is 5708-10-18; after local sunset the adjacent Hebrew route is 5708-10-19.
This is the 31 December 1947 civil slot, whose daytime route is 18 Tevet 5708. The operation is generally placed on the night of 31 December–1 January. If it began after local sunset, the incident itself belongs to 19 Tevet, the route used for its focused article. The available account does not fix the first shot to a minute; JTA published its report on 2 January, not on the raid's start date.6
