The raid on Balad al-Shaykh and Hawassa continued or reached its immediate aftermath on New Year's Day. Reports of dead and wounded circulated, while the effect on neighboring Palestinian Arab families began to emerge. This was the same operation introduced in Day 32, not a second attack created by the new civil date.
What did early Arab casualty reports say?
In his diary dated 4 January, דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION preserved reports attributed to Arab communications about 1 January. One described fourteen killed and nineteen wounded in Hawassa; another called twenty killed and twenty-three wounded across Hawassa and Balad al-Shaykh the official
figures. The diary is evidence that these figures circulated. It does not identify a complete hospital register or settle which villages and dates each figure includes.1
The focused study at ההגנה HAʾHAGANA raided Balad al-Shaykh and Hawassa. treats the operation once and compares these early figures with later histories.
Did the raid empty Balad al-Shaykh?
The Institute for Palestine Studies describes some residents leaving by 7 January, followed by a separate final occupation and displacement in April. The evidence supports flight after the raid; it does not establish a complete evacuation on 1 January, an expulsion order for every household, or permanent denial of return on that date.2
What else was changing for institutions of עם ישראל AM YISRAʾEL?
The violence around חיפה HAIFA forced the ההגנה HAʾHAGANA to make choices about armed retaliation and the protection of workers. Those choices did not merge the refinery murders and the village raid into one event or one casualty ledger. The date of each death, where known, belongs to its own person-level record.
How is this dated?
This is Day 33 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-01-01. Its public Ivrit route is 5708-10-19; after local sunset the adjacent Hebrew route is 5708-10-20.
This is the 1 January 1948 civil slot and the daytime public route of 19 Tevet 5708. The raid began on the preceding night and may have continued after midnight; its start and end hours remain unverified. Ben-Gurion wrote his diary entry on 4 January but explicitly relayed information concerning 1 January. JTA published a report on 2 January. Neither later document date creates a new attack on its publication day.3
Guided reflections
- What would a person-level casualty register clarify that competing totals cannot?
- Why must flight in January be distinguished from the village's later depopulation?
