לח״י LEḤI detonated a vehicle bomb at the Saraya in יפו YAFO, where the city's Arab National Committee had offices. The blast killed and wounded people inside and around the building, including noncombatants. Contemporary reporting and a Lehi account agree on the date and approximate time but disagree about the death toll.

How was the Saraya attacked?

A Lehi heritage reproduction names two operatives and dates placement of the explosive vehicle to Sunday, 22 Tevet, at 12:40. An Associated Press report filed from יפו YAFO on 4 January also gave 12:40, described extensive destruction and recorded damage to nearby shops, a police station and a bank. The original Lehi announcement remains unexamined, but the contemporary dateline independently supports the civil date.1 2

The focused article is לח״י LEḤI bombed the Saraya in יפו YAFO..

Who was affected?

The New York Herald Tribune initially reported fourteen dead and about one hundred wounded; the Lehi heritage account gives ten dead, while later histories give higher totals. These are conflicting counts of one explosion. The contemporary report named Dr. Auni Hannun, a member of the committee and relative of the city's mayor, among those injured. Neither his presence nor Lehi's characterization establishes the status of every victim.3

Was the committee one political faction?

Lehi associated its target with the al-Husayni camp. Arnon Golan's study describes rivalry among Arab leaders in יפו YAFO, including the mayor's opposition to Haj Amin al-Husayni. This does not prove that the committee was uninvolved in fighting, but it makes Lehi's simple account of one unified adversary inadequate.4

How is this dated?

This is Day 36 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-01-04. Its public Ivrit route is 5708-10-22; after local sunset the adjacent Hebrew route is 5708-10-23.

The Lehi statement reproduced later and an AP dispatch filed from יפו YAFO both date the blast to about 12:40 on 4 January 1948, before sunset: 22 Tevet 5708. The newspaper was printed on 5 January. This article uses the occurrence date rather than that issue date; a later listing of another comparable Saraya explosion on 8 January has not been independently substantiated.5 6

Guided reflections

  • What can Lehi's statement establish about intended targets, and what cannot it establish about the dead?
  • How would a name-by-name casualty register change the interpretation of the early figures?
