An הארגון HAʾIRGUN attack near Jaffa Gate sought to break the isolation of the quarter of יהודים YEHUDIM in ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM, but did not end it. Explosives killed Palestinian Arabs near the gate and a cafe; British forces killed three הארגון HAʾIRGUN attackers. Reports disagree whether the assault took place on 7 or 8 January.
What occurred near Jaffa Gate?
JTA described הארגון HAʾIRGUN fighters using a seized armored vehicle and throwing explosives toward armed positions and the Piccadilly Cafe. Its first bulletin counted fifteen Arabs killed and forty-three wounded; a later bulletin gave an official count of seventeen dead and thirty-six wounded. The presence of armed positions does not establish that everyone struck near the gate or cafe was a fighter.1 2
The focused study is הארגון HAʾIRGUN bombed the Jaffa Gate area in ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM.. Its exact civil date remains disputed.
Did the attack open the quarter of יהודים YEHUDIM?
What happened to children in גוש עציון GUŜ EẐION?
Ben-Gurion was told that around seventy children had been taken out of the settlement bloc under British military escort. His diary shows that the evacuation had occurred by 7 January; it does not give the travel date or a household list. This was an organized removal for safety, distinct from flight, expulsion, or denial of return.5
How is this dated?
This is Day 39 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-01-07. Its public Ivrit route is 5708-10-25; after local sunset the adjacent Hebrew route is 5708-10-26.
The daily civil slot is 7 January 1948 and its daytime route is 25 Tevet 5708. Ben-Gurion recorded at about 18:00 that he had heard of the הארגון HAʾIRGUN attack, supporting occurrence by that evening; local sunset may already have advanced the Hebrew date to 26 Tevet. JTA's bulletins dated 8 and 9 January describe the attack as occurring on the eighth. The working incident placement follows the diary while preserving this conflict; the British police log is needed to settle its civil day and hour. The children's journey is dated only as completed by 7 January.6 7
Guided reflections
- What difference would a police time log make to this attack's civil and Hebrew dates?
- How did the isolation of the quarter of יהודים YEHUDIM affect choices made for children elsewhere?
