The first meeting of the UN Palestine Commission opened the practical question of how partition would become government. In ארץ ישראל EREẒ YISRAʾEL, דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION and senior commanders were already examining the cost and methods of a wider war. News of attacks in the north and the loss of recruits near Gan Yavne made the gap between international decisions and immediate security painfully concrete.

What began at Lake Success?

The commission met from 11:00 a.m. until noon, elected Karel Lisicky chairman and Raúl Diez de Medina vice-chairman, and invited representatives of Britain, the Arab Higher Committee and the Jewish Agency. Its charge included provisional government and the transfer of administration. The meeting did not itself transfer authority from Britain or create an operating state. Its decisions have a full study at The UN commission began implementing partition..1

What kind of defense did דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION envisage?

His diary records discussion of an army budget of roughly twelve million pounds through 1 October, fortifications, recruitment, transport and armored vehicles. He questioned whether the community could finance the proposals and favored offensive action over reliance on fixed positions alone. The archive's English translation records:

In the center we must ensure complete control.2

The surrounding passage names Tira, Salama and Yazur as prospective objectives. This is evidence of plans for offensive operations before the later spring campaigns. It does not establish that these places were captured that day, that a displacement occurred, or that every later operation followed one predetermined plan.

What happened on the northern frontier?

The diary reports an attack from Syria on דן DAN and Kfar Szold that morning. JTA's 11 January report describes fighting and British intervention, but the sources' force estimates and sequence of renewed attacks are not identical. The incident study at Forces from Syria attacked settlements of יהודים YEHUDIM. preserves those limits. Cross-border fighting here remains part of the Mandate phase.3 4

What happened to the recruits near Gan Yavne?

Eleven recruits of ההגנה HAʾHAGANA died in an encounter that later unit history describes as capture, escape and pursuit, including the murder of three prisoners. Police-linked press accounts preserved by Khalidi instead describe an attack and counterattack and give a different toll. The full study at Eleven recruits of ההגנה HAʾHAGANA were killed near Gan Yavne. explains why those accounts cannot be silently merged. The return of eight bodies occurred on the following day.5 6

How is this dated?

This is Day 41 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-01-09. Its public Ivrit route is 5708-10-27; after local sunset the adjacent Hebrew route is 5708-10-28.

The UN record gives the meeting's actual date and daytime hours. The diary independently dates military discussions and the northern attack report to 9 January. The Givati history dates the fatal Gan Yavne patrol to this day and the return of eight bodies to 10 January. The 11 January press issues are later reportage. Exact hours for the recruits' deaths remain unresolved; their article explains the possible after-sunset route.7 8 9

Guided reflections

  • How did the international implementation process relate to the community’s immediate need for defense?
  • Which records could resolve the conflicting accounts of the Gan Yavne deaths?
