ההגנה HAʾHAGANA destroyed the Bnot Yaakov bridge as armed movement from Syria threatened northern settlements. At Kfar Uria, defenders confronted a substantial attack. דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION's diary also exposed a less visible weakness: mobilization orders did not guarantee that men would report or that the community could spare trained workers.

Why attack a bridge?

The demolition sought to obstruct a route for armed entry into ארץ ישראל EREẒ YISRAʾEL. The later chronology and פלמ״ח PALMAḤ database place the January operation on 11 January, while JTA reported it in the following day's issue. The study at ההגנה HAʾHAGANA destroyed the Bnot Yaakov bridge. distinguishes this operation from the 1946 demolition and explains the unresolved hour. A destroyed crossing did not seal the whole frontier.1 2 3

How did Kfar Uria withstand the assault?

The military heritage history describes morning fire from several directions, dwindling ammunition, an aerial supply delivery and reinforcements of ההגנה HAʾHAGANA. British armored vehicles also intervened. Morris dates the principal assault to 11 January. The 12 January JTA account describes a wider night-to-dusk sequence, so the duration must remain qualified.4 5 6

The full article at Arab fighters attacked Kfar Uria. compares those records. In particular, the contemporary combined category of people killed or seriously wounded must not be repeated as a count of deaths. Later histories' different injury figures also remain attributed.

What did mobilization leave unresolved?

The diary records an estimate that about thirty percent of those called up were not reporting. It also discusses the need to preserve industrial labor and prepare medical and vocational services. A recruitment percentage in a working discussion is not an audited count of the entire population or an explanation of each absence.7

The problem was institutional as well as military. The community needed defenders, production and care at the same time. Calling up a skilled worker could strengthen a unit while weakening the workshop or service on which it depended. The diary shows leaders confronting that tension; it does not establish that a completed manpower system had resolved it.

How is this dated?

This is Day 43 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-01-11. Its public Ivrit route is 5708-10-29; after local sunset the adjacent Hebrew route is 5708-11-01.

The diary and later operational chronologies identify 11 January. Kfar Uria's main assault is specifically placed in the morning by the heritage account; bridge timing is less precise. The 12 January issue is reportage about the bridge and battle, not evidence that both began on the twelfth. Fighting or demolition after sunset on the eleventh would fall on 1 Shevat; the individual studies state their working placements separately.8 9 10

Guided reflections

  • Why does an order to mobilize differ from the number who actually report?
  • How can a bridge demolition change a route without closing an entire frontier?
