ההגנה HAʾHAGANA raided the school hill at Salama before dawn and destroyed buildings before withdrawing. The day also belongs to the aftermath of the loss of the thirty-five, whose bodies were brought for burial at כפר עציון KFAR EẒʾYON, according to the later reconstruction. Reports and official returns covering this period require care: a report issued later about losses through 18 January is not a count of deaths on this day.
What did the raid at Salama accomplish?
The Alexandroni heritage account describes a platoon and demolition personnel taking the school hill and blowing up buildings. Its stated purpose was to prevent use of the position for attacks. The full study at ההגנה HAʾHAGANA raided the school hill at Salama. compares that account with the village history and the official memorial of אריאל אנקלביץ ARIʾEL ANKELVITZ.1 2
Ankelvitz was gravely wounded during the raid and died on 20 January. The official memorial corrects the heritage summary's compression of his injury and death. His case belongs to the raid's consequences, but he is not counted as both a death on the eighteenth and another death on the twentieth.3
Did the raid empty the village?
The available records establish destruction at the school hill, not the capture or evacuation of all Salama. No household roster, evacuation order or denial of return has been established for this date. Later capture must retain its own chronology. A military order's restriction on harming women and children likewise requires comparison with actual outcomes rather than being treated as proof that nobody was harmed.4
What did the day’s reporting say about the bloc?
JTA's 18 January issue described renewed fighting around גוש עציון GUŜ EẐION and an ambushed reinforcement force. Its figures for men attacked and men who reached the bloc do not identify a second group of thirty-five or establish a second loss of the same men. The bodies' arrival for burial, reconstructed for 18 January, is treated in event://5708־11־05־ל־heh־killed LAMED.5 6
What did later official returns count through this day?
British figures published on 20 January and discussed in the UN record on 21 January cover the interval from 30 November through 18 January. They give 333 יהודים YEHUDIM killed and 633 wounded, and 345 Arabs killed and 877 wounded, together with separate British military and police categories. Those are official reported cumulative figures, not a verified person-level roll and not a daily toll.7 8
The sources differ over British civilian deaths, and a related UN press release's printed Arab wounded total conflicts with the component figures. The discrepancy must remain visible. These returns are not added to incident figures or used to turn publication on a later date into new casualties on the eighteenth.
How is this dated?
This is Day 50 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-01-18. Its public Ivrit route is 5708-11-07; after local sunset the adjacent Hebrew route is 5708-11-08.
The Salama raid is dated to dawn on 18 January, within 7 Shevat; its preceding night also falls on that Hebrew date. Ankelvitz's later death is expressly dated 20 January. The arrival of the thirty-five for burial is assigned to 18 January by Lewis and Marco. JTA's issue date anchors the renewed-fighting report, while the British and UN returns were published after this batch and cover an interval ending on the eighteenth. Their reporting date and statistical cutoff are separate.9 10 11 12
Guided reflections
- Why should a casualty return’s cutoff date remain separate from its publication date?
- What evidence would connect the school hill’s destruction to particular household departures?
