Arab forces attacked Yehiam, while foreign volunteers were entering ארץ ישראל EREẒ YISRAʾEL under the continuing Mandate. The evidence for the assault and for a border crossing comes from different records. Their proximity in time does not establish that every man crossing the border fought in that day's battle.
How did the defenders hold Yehiam?
The heritage history describes residents reinforced by a field-force platoon resisting repeated assaults under Adib Shishakli's Arab Liberation Army command, with local fighters also involved. It reports four defenders killed. The Agency memorandum describes a larger total including five settlement policemen. Their possible overlap and the conflicting 20 January assignment are explained in Arab forces attacked Yehiam..1 2
Holding the settlement protected its residents but did not secure its approaches. The attacking force's destruction of bridges and culverts placed the community's continued supply and movement at risk. A repelled assault could therefore leave isolation unresolved.
What did the English imperial authorities report about the border?
A report from the High Commissioner dated 27 January, reproduced in the UN record, described approximately seven hundred armed Syrians crossing from the Hashemite Kingdom of Transjordan during the night of 20–21 January. The account refers to organized movement with vehicles, equipment and supplies. Its number is an official estimate, not a verified nominal roll.3
The later reporting date must remain visible. The crossing belongs to the night described, and later arrival at an inland concentration point would be a different stage of movement. Counts of volunteers appearing in several dispatches may overlap; they cannot be added as separate contingents without unit-level evidence.
What military organization was being proposed?
הסוכנות היהודית HAʾSOḪNUT HAʾYEHUDIT's militia memorandum bears the date 21 January. It envisioned a substantially larger organized force but acknowledged that the proposed militia did not yet exist. Its circulation on the twenty-second and presentation on the twenty-seventh are later acts. The full study is הסוכנות היהודית HAʾSOḪNUT HAʾYEHUDIT sought arms for a militia of יהודים YEHUDIM..4
Foreign armed entry, local defense and planning for state institutions were proceeding together. All belong to the Mandate phase. Their occurrence does not erase the later distinction between irregular intervention and the regular armies' invasion after independence.
How is this dated?
This is Day 53 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-01-21. Its public Ivrit route is 5708-11-10; after local sunset the adjacent Hebrew route is 5708-11-11.
The main Yehiam assault is assigned to 21 January by two sources, with the conflicting twentieth and renewed attack on the twenty-second retained. The reported border crossing occurred during the night of 20–21 January, normally within 10 Shevat, although the exact start hour is unknown. The English imperial report is dated 27 January. The militia memorandum is dated 21 January and circulated one day later.5 6 7

- Why does repelling an attack not necessarily end a settlement’s isolation?
- How could repeated reports of a moving force produce a false count of separate contingents?
