Seven settlement policemen were killed at يازور YAZUR while protecting the convoy route. Forces of ההגנה HAʾHAGANA then attacked Arab vehicles and positions in the area. Farther north, the Agency's later memorandum describes a renewed assault on Yehiam. The incidents have distinct locations and casualty records; a day of several attacks does not supply one reliable combined toll.

What happened to the seven guards?

The advance guard encountered an ambush at the roadblock. The truck burned, and accounts describe killings of men who could no longer resist. The original Seven Guards article has been expanded as Seven guards were killed at يازور YAZUR., preserving the seven names and the uncertainty over whether a mine initiated the attack. A separate death near Motza must not become an eighth guard at يازور YAZUR.1 2

The men were protecting travel between communities of יהודים YEHUDIM. Their loss affected both their families and the convoy's ability to continue. The evidence supports murder within the episode without establishing the identical final circumstances of all seven.

What followed the ambush?

The contemporary dispatch and later operational reconstruction describe attacks by ההגנה HAʾHAGANA on Arab traffic and positions. Their reported totals differ and may overlap. The separate study at ההגנה HAʾHAGANA attacked Arab traffic after the killings at يازور YAZUR. examines that response without presuming that every subsequent victim was responsible for the guards' deaths.3 4

Was Yehiam attacked again?

The Agency memorandum dated 2 February explicitly reports a renewed attack on 22 January after the main assault of the preceding day. It describes organized companies and mortar support. Its account is contemporary-period advocacy evidence, not a checked final roll of attackers or casualties. The renewal is included within Arab forces attacked Yehiam., rather than generating another count of the same defenders lost in the broader fighting.5

The war's strain lay in this simultaneity: protecting the road did not protect the northern settlement, and holding a settlement did not secure travel elsewhere. The institutions of עם ישראל AM YISRAʾEL faced separate immediate defense demands while planning a larger force.

How is this dated?

This is Day 54 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-01-22. Its public Ivrit route is 5708-11-11; after local sunset the adjacent Hebrew route is 5708-11-12.

The guards' deaths are dated 22 January by the memorial account; JTA's issue appeared on 23 January. The renewed Yehiam assault is expressly assigned to 22 January in the later Agency memorandum. Subsequent road reprisals extend into the twenty-third. No exact hour for each death or action is established, so the daily route does not settle their individual sunset boundaries.6 7

Guided reflections

  • Why must the deaths in an ambush be distinguished from deaths during its aftermath?
  • What did simultaneous threats demand of a defense force with limited resources?
