The road fighting continued in the aftermath of the guards' deaths at يازور YAZUR. A later operational reconstruction assigns further attacks on vehicles and a culvert demolition to 23 January. The day's newspaper carried the account of the earlier ambush alongside other killings and intelligence claims. Their shared issue date does not place every incident on this civil day.
What further operations are dated to this day?
The later Givati-based account describes demolition of a culvert on the road and attacks on four additional Arab vehicles, reporting three dead and ten wounded. It also describes searches and seizure of weapons by the English forces in the area. These are source-specific claims rather than a verified final daily return.1
The full study ההגנה HAʾHAGANA attacked Arab traffic after the killings at يازور YAZUR. keeps these actions distinct from the first response and explains why larger retrospective totals must not be added to the contemporary figures. Occupants' identities and combatant status remain unresolved where the sources provide only aggregate numbers.
What did readers learn about the guards?
JTA's 23 January issue described the fatal roadblock attack and ensuing fighting. The attack on the seven belongs to 22 January. The newspaper also reported that a crowd of יהודים YEHUDIM killed a non-Jewish Polish man in תל אביב TEL AVIV, alleging that he had Arab guerrilla contacts. An allegation about contacts does not establish guilt or justify a mob killing; the report does not provide a verified identity or an independently secure hour.2
His death cannot be counted as an Arab casualty solely because the report alleges connections with Arabs. Accurate responsibility requires preserving both the crowd's reported identity and the victim's reported identity.
What did the intelligence figures mean?
The same dispatch attributed to intelligence of ההגנה HAʾHAGANA a claim that five hundred armed men from the Lebanese Republic and six hundred from the Syrian Republic had entered in recent days. This reporting window may overlap the seven hundred described in the later English imperial return. The figures are different reporting claims, not automatically different units to total together.3
The report shows leaders assessing a wider armed threat. It does not establish that a newly counted force of eleven hundred entered on the twenty-third alone.
How is this dated?
This is Day 55 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-01-23. Its public Ivrit route is 5708-11-12; after local sunset the adjacent Hebrew route is 5708-11-13.
The culvert and further vehicle attacks are assigned to 23 January by later operational history; original logs remain uninspected. The JTA issue is dated 23 January but describes the seven guards' earlier deaths and other incidents with relative wording. Those additional occurrences are anchored as reported by this date, not all proved to have happened on it. Sunset hours remain unresolved.4 5

- What is lost when an unnamed victim is classified from alleged associates rather than established identity?
- Why must intelligence estimates be compared before they are added?
