Reports of the previous day's road battle reached readers alongside news that the institution JTA called the Jewish Home for Incurables in the Old City of ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM had been evacuated. The institution's name is preserved as the contemporary report gives it. Its vulnerable residents belonged to the wartime history of the city as surely as the armed men guarding the roads.

What was reported about the care home?

JTA's 26 January issue said the building had suffered serious damage a few days earlier and that its occupants had now been removed. It reported that personnel of the English Empire handed the keys to a member of an Arab body whose name is incomplete in the surviving text. That wording cannot safely be expanded into a precise organization or a named recipient.1

The report supports an institutional evacuation following damage. It supplies no checked patient count, destination list or return history. Removal from a damaged care building is not by itself proof of a permanent expulsion of those residents from the city.

Which battle did the day’s newspaper describe?

The Mount Castel report belongs to the engagement near Qastal on 25 January, examined in Convoy guards fought Arab forces near Qastal.. Its unstable casualty figures and damaged text cannot establish another battle on the twenty-sixth. The associated demolition report may refer to the Suqreir operation covered in ההגנה HAʾHAGANA destroyed houses at Suqreir after residents fled..2 3

The practical consequence was visible even when the final toll was not: the road had failed to carry the convoy through as intended. The people awaiting transport and supplies faced the consequences of an engagement reported at a distance.

What did diplomacy reveal about arms?

An American diplomatic record dated 26 January discussed arms supplies from the English Empire to Arab states in relation to treaty obligations and the contested arms policy. Such state-level arrangements matter to the military imbalance feared by representatives of עם ישראל AM YISRAʾEL. They do not prove the origin of every rifle used by irregular fighters or identify a shipment used in this particular road battle.4

The day's evidence thus joins care for endangered residents, the circulation of battle news and negotiations about military resources. Each has its own date and evidentiary reach.

How is this dated?

This is Day 58 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-01-26. Its public Ivrit route is 5708-11-15; after local sunset the adjacent Hebrew route is 5708-11-16.

The daily account uses the 26 January issue as its reportage anchor for the care-home evacuation; the exact occurrence day cannot be fixed from today without its original dispatch dateline. The earlier damage remains earlier and undated within this account. The road battle has a separate 25 January dispatch anchor. The diplomatic record is dated 26 January; precise hours and sunset boundaries are not established here.5 6

Guided reflections

  • What records would let an evacuation account follow patients beyond a damaged building?
  • Why does a government’s arms policy not establish the provenance of a particular weapon?
