Attacks around תל אביב TEL AVIV and בן שמן BEN SHEMEN, threats of wider Arab military intervention and preparations for the transfer of government marked this stage of the war. In ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM, two policemen of the English Empire were killed after dark. The day's sources document different actions by different actors; their casualties and responsibilities cannot be combined into one encounter.
What did the fighting reports describe?
JTA's 29 January bulletin reported an attack from the area JTA calls Salameh
and a counterattack by ההגנה HAʾHAGANA. It gave two wounded among יהודים YEHUDIM, one seriously, and nine wounded Arabs. A separate attack on בן שמן BEN SHEMEN was reportedly repelled, with one Arab attacker killed. These are the bulletin's figures, without an independently checked roster or fully recovered dispatch dating.1
The same bulletin described negotiations to resume talks concerning the Old City. Efforts to protect residents and negotiate access were taking place alongside armed defense; the report does not establish that an agreement had already secured the community.
Who killed the policemen?
A dispatch dated 29 January, reproduced in the next day's UN press digest, reported two policemen shot on בן יהודה BEN YEHUDA Street and said that the responsible organization was unknown. A report in Haaretz the following morning places the shooting at about 19:45. Later attribution to לח״י LEḤI requires comparison with operational and police records. The reported hour places the shooting after sunset, on 19 שבט ŜEVAT.2 3
What wider intervention was being discussed?
An AP report from Cairo quoted Arab League press official Assad Dagher discussing a government that could invite neighboring regular armies to intervene. The stated purpose was to prevent a state for יהודים YEHUDIM. This is evidence of public discussion of military intervention before independence, not an invasion order issued that day or proof of agreement among every Arab government.4
How were institutions preparing for the future?
The UN commission's first monthly report bears the date 29 January. It recorded obstacles to implementation, including the English Empire's refusal to open an immigration port before ending the Mandate. A separate congressional hearing reported by JTA concerned a purchase of two hundred tons of demolition material associated with הסוכנות היהודית HAʾSOḪNUT HAʾYEHUDIT. The account described undelivered material; purchasing it did not establish that it reached ארץ ישראל EREẒ YISRAʾEL.5 6
How is this dated?
This is Day 61 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-01-29. Its public Ivrit route is 5708-11-18; after local sunset the adjacent Hebrew route is 5708-11-19.7
The commission report is explicitly dated 29 January. The police shooting and Cairo statement are assigned to that date by dispatches; the police shooting's reported 19:45 hour instead places that incident on the adjacent Hebrew day. The JTA issue anchors reportage about local attacks and the hearing; it does not prove that every described action occurred on its publication date.8 9
Guided reflections
- What does a public discussion of intervention establish before an invasion order exists?
- Why does the evening hour of the police shooting change its Hebrew date?
