An Arab Liberation Army force entered ארץ ישראל EREẒ YISRAʾEL during the night of 29–30 January. Contemporary reporting also described arrests of defenders in ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM, where people depended on armed protection amid continuing attacks. The two developments show outside reinforcement and local defensive vulnerability during the Mandate.
What crossed the river overnight?
The later official memorandum gives approximately 950 armed men in nineteen vehicles. It says that the force dispersed among villages in several districts. JTA's report of roughly one thousand may describe the same group; the numbers should not be added. The fuller study, Arab Liberation Army troops crossed into ארץ ישראל EREẒ YISRAʾEL., separates the night of entry from the February reports that documented it.1
The force's reported uniforms, transport and equipment establish organized armed reinforcement. The claim that Prince Talal personally commanded it appears in newspaper reporting from unnamed sources and remains unverified. An identifiable foreign force does not make every unrelated attack its operation.
What happened to the defenders in the city?
JTA reported that personnel of the English Empire arrested fifteen members of ההגנה HAʾHAGANA at the institution called Armon Yeladim
in the report, a children's settlement. It said that gunfire came from لفتا LIFTA while the defenders were being disarmed. If accurate, the arrests removed local defensive capacity during active shooting. The article does not supply the commander's explanation, an arrest register or the detainees' subsequent fate.2
The same report described explosions in רוממה ROMEMA and the Old City, with further sniping. Each incident had its own location and circumstances. The bulletin's publication date alone cannot settle the exact day and hour of every explosion, and the presence of armed defenders does not erase the children and residents whose safety depended on them.
What did these developments mean for the transition?
An administration preparing to withdraw still controlled policing, weapons enforcement and access to the country. The UN commission was meanwhile trying to arrange the institutions that would follow it. The official account of the armed crossing illustrates the difficulty of controlling entry; the arrest report illustrates the constraints placed on local defense. Neither establishes a newly completed transfer of governing power that Friday.
How is this dated?
This is Day 62 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-01-30. Its public Ivrit route is 5708-11-19; after local sunset the adjacent Hebrew route is 5708-11-20.3
The crossing is explicitly placed in the night of 29–30 January by the official memorandum. That night ordinarily falls on 19 שבט ŜEVAT. The arrests and explosions are anchored to JTA's 30 January issue, with exact occurrence hours still unresolved. The official crossing communication is dated 4 February and was received on 5 February; those are later reporting dates.4 5
