The Palestine Post appeared on 2 February despite the destruction of its offices the preceding night. JTA continued working from temporary quarters. הסוכנות היהודית HAʾSOḪNUT HAʾYEHUDIT also dated a memorandum placing evidence and allegations of organized armed incursions before the UN commission. The work of reporting, defending the community and seeking international action continued while buildings still burned.

How did the press continue operating?

A commercial press produced an emergency edition. The contemporary digest records the newspaper's intention to avoid missing an issue, while JTA describes temporary arrangements for sending news to readers inside and outside the country. The complete bombing account is Bombing of The Palestine Post offices..1 2

Resuming publication did not end the human consequences. JTA reported displaced residents and injured people, while its next issue described an inquiry into responsibility. Those losses belong to the earlier attack and its aftermath, not to a second bombing on the publication date.3

Who claimed responsibility?

A dispatch dated 2 February recorded Abd al-Qadir الحسيني AL-ḤUSAYNI claiming that his men had carried out the bombing. Other early reports circulated allegations involving members of the imperial police. The claim is substantial contemporary evidence but does not identify every participant or settle the alleged assistance. The UN digest reproduces reporting; it does not certify an independent UN investigation.4 5

What did the Agency present to the UN?

Its memorandum of 2 February assembled a case concerning foreign aggression, organized armed entry and attacks on communities of יהודים YEHUDIM. The document is primary evidence of the Agency's presentation and the incidents it invoked. Its casualty estimates and command attributions still require incident-by-incident comparison with other records.6

The first monthly commission report should not be dated to this day merely because it belongs to the same diplomatic sequence. It was signed on 29 January and transmitted through documents dated 30 and 31 January. Keeping those stages distinct makes the Agency's February submission visible as its own act, without manufacturing a new commission report or duplicating earlier armed crossings.

How is this dated?

This is Day 65 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-02-02. Its public Ivrit route is 5708-11-22; after local sunset the adjacent Hebrew route is 5708-11-23.7

The newspaper issue and the Agency memorandum both bear 2 February dates. The responsibility claim is in an explicitly dated 2 February dispatch preserved in the 3 February UN digest. The bombing itself was late on 1 February, after sunset, and therefore also falls on 22 שבט ŜEVAT. The date of continuing publication is not the date of the explosion.8 9

Guided reflections

  • What did continued publication accomplish while the physical losses remained?
  • How should a claim of responsibility be tested before naming every participant?
