Reports assigned to 4 February described a clash at the northern frontier, the death of a man wounded in the newspaper bombing and a denial of allegations against refugees detained in Cyprus. The day also brought publication of an official January casualty return. These developments concern different people and reporting periods; the monthly figures are not new February deaths.
What happened at the frontier?
JTA's next-day bulletin reported that forces of the English Empire repelled uniformed armed men attempting to enter from the Syrian Republic to attack communities near the place JTA calls Mishmar Hayarden
. It gave one Arab killed, several wounded and six captives, identified as two Iraqis and four Syrians. The remaining attackers reportedly withdrew across the frontier.1
The engagement differs from the earlier nineteen-vehicle crossing examined in Arab Liberation Army troops crossed into ארץ ישראל EREẒ YISRAʾEL.. The report does not identify the captured men by name or prove that every frontier group belonged to the same command. It also records an instance of imperial forces opposing armed entry, which should be retained alongside evidence of restrictions imposed on the defense of יהודים YEHUDIM.
Who died of wounds from the bombing?
The same bulletin reported the death of Haim Weinberg
, wounded in the attack on The Palestine Post and JTA offices. It described his recent arrival from the place the source calls Russia
and wartime guerrilla service against the German army. His death is linked to Bombing of The Palestine Post offices., with 1 February as the injury date and 4 February as the reported date of death.2
Those biographical details do not establish that he was the last survivor of a family murdered in השואה HAʾŜOA (the Holocaust). A final bombing total may already include him, so his death cannot automatically be added again.
What allegation about refugees was denied?
JTA relayed a Reuters account in which the Cyprus camp commissioner denied finding Communist agents, literature or identity papers among the roughly fifteen thousand passengers of Pan York and Pan Crescent. This concerned the earlier large arrivals, not the 280 aboard the Thirty-Five. The denial challenges a specific allegation; it is not a complete biography or political survey of every detainee.3
What period did the casualty return cover?
JTA reported January totals of 160 killed among יהודים YEHUDIM, 222 Arabs, nineteen imperial soldiers and policemen, and nineteen people in another civilian category. The categories mixed civilians and armed personnel. These figures require comparison with an original return and individual records; they are neither 4 February losses nor an increment that can safely be added to existing cumulative totals.4
How is this dated?
This is Day 67 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-02-04. Its public Ivrit route is 5708-11-24; after local sunset the adjacent Hebrew route is 5708-11-25.5
The 5 February bulletin's relative wording supports 4 February as the working date for the reported frontier clash, death and release of the January figures, but the original dispatch and operational logs remain uninspected. The Cyprus denial has a 4 February publication anchor; the precise utterance time is unknown. The January casualty period, 1 February injury and February death date remain distinct. Sunset hours are unresolved.6 7
