Official memorial records date the murder of four ההגנה HAʾHAGANA defenders after imperial custody to this day. A separate defender, אברהם מיכאל קירשנבוים AVRAHAM MIḪAʾEL KIRSHENBOIM, died from wounds received in the battle at ימין משה YEMIN MOŜE two days earlier. The distinction matters: these were different incidents, even though their deaths fall together in the memorial calendar.
Who was murdered after detention?
The four were נפתלי שול NAFTALI SHUL, שמעון ניסני ŜIMʾON NISANI, שלום ליאון ŜALOM LEON and שאול יהודה Kessler ŜAʾUL YEHUDA. Their memorials describe imperial detention and disarmament followed by handover or release among Arabs who murdered them. The full study, Murder of four defenders after imperial custody., records their lives, the contemporary allegation of imperial complicity and the later inquiry.1 2 3 4
A 13 February dispatch says the handover occurred the preceding night. A parliamentary question later names Friday, 13 February. The working memorial route remains 2 Adar I, while the alternative civil date and possible sunset transition are explicitly open. No final inquiry report has been recovered.
Who died from earlier wounds?
אברהם מיכאל קירשנבוים AVRAHAM MIḪAʾEL KIRSHENBOIM died after being wounded during the 10 February defense examined in Defense of ימין משה YEMIN MOŜE.. His memorial describes imperial machine-gun fire striking him during that battle and another wound while he was being carried away. Recording his death on the twelfth does not create a new attack on the neighborhood or prove he was absent from every earlier press casualty estimate.5
What resources were being assembled?
The day's diary records twenty-eight aircraft then present: one twin-engine aircraft, twenty Auster aircraft and seven others. Purchases or expectations abroad belong to a different category from aircraft already available. The entry also discusses shortages affecting armor and equipment. These details show the material limits under which the community was preparing an organized defense.6
JTA's following-day bulletin reported five Arab passengers killed when a bus near צפת ẒEFAT struck a mine, with an accompanying allegation of gunfire. The available report does not securely identify the responsible organization. Those deaths cannot be omitted, attributed to a particular force without evidence or folded into the four defenders' murder.7
How is this dated?
This is Day 75 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-02-12. The register maps its daytime portion to ב׳ באדר א׳ ה׳תש״ח 2nd 𝑜𝑓 Adar I, AM 5708; after local sunset the Hebrew day changes to ג׳ באדר א׳ ה׳תש״ח 3rd 𝑜𝑓 Adar I, AM 5708. This is a calendar conversion convention, not evidence that every reported act happened in daylight.
The memorials explicitly give 12 February and 2 Adar I. The custody deaths have the competing 13 February parliamentary date and an unresolved nighttime boundary; Kirshenboim's memorial separates his 10 February wounds from his 12 February death. Aircraft figures belong to the dated diary, while the bus report's issue date is 13 February and its exact occurrence hour remains unverified.8 9 10
