The defenders of טירת צבי TIRAT ZVI repelled a large Arab Liberation Army attack, and the UN commission called for armed assistance to implement partition. Le Monde also published the interview in which فوزي القاوقجي FAWZI AL-QAWUQJI denied the laws of war to יהודים YEHUDIM. These were a battle, an institutional appeal and the publication of an earlier conversation, each with its own chronology.
How did the community withstand the assault?
The battle threatened a religious קיבוץ KIBUẒ and its residents. נפתלי פרידלנדר NAFTALI FRIEDLANDER, a mechanic, farmer and machine gunner, was killed defending it. The full study, Defense of טירת צבי TIRAT ZVI., connects the military outcome to his wife and son and preserves the competing casualty estimates rather than selecting the largest claim.1 2
Contemporary police reporting gave thirty-five Arab dead; other reporting and later histories gave different figures. The commander's reported victory claims cannot overturn evidence that the community held. Precise duration and final losses require operational and individual records.
What assistance did the commission request?
Its First Special Report asked the Security Council for military means to maintain security during the transfer of authority. The full study, The UN commission requested armed assistance to implement partition., explains its finding that organized armed resistance threatened implementation and distinguishes the request from an actual deployment.3
The report's casualty table covers 30 November through 1 February, not this day. Its online wounded figures also contain an arithmetic inconsistency. Those figures cannot supply a verified total for the battle or the entire period through 16 February.
What earlier claims need their own dates?
Le Monde's publication belongs to 16 February, but the interview in فوزي القاوقجي FAWZI AL-QAWUQJI rejected the laws of war for יהודים YEHUDIM. is datelined Damascus, 13 February. Its report of hostility and prisoner policy must remain attached to that conversation rather than become a second declaration invented for publication day.4
The diary also records doubt about whether a proposed contact associated with Ahmad Sharif of חברון ḤEVRON had originated with him or with the intermediary. That limits the interpretation of the 9 February overture. It does not demonstrate that a peace agreement was made and then broken.5
How is this dated?
This is Day 79 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-02-16. The register maps its daytime portion to ו׳ באדר א׳ ה׳תש״ח 6th 𝑜𝑓 Adar I, AM 5708; after local sunset the Hebrew day changes to ז׳ באדר א׳ ה׳תש״ח 7th 𝑜𝑓 Adar I, AM 5708. This is a calendar conversion convention, not evidence that every reported act happened in daylight.
The battle's working date is 16 February, supported by the next-day dispatch and the named defender's explicit civil and Hebrew memorial dates. Competing two-day duration accounts remain in the full study. The UN report and Le Monde publication are dated 16 February; the interview is datelined 13 February. Diary qualifications are recorded on the sixteenth but concern an earlier contact. No single publication date replaces all of these stages.6 7 8
