לח״י LEḤI bombed military coaches near רחובות REḪOVOT, while disarmed defenders and workers were killed at the factory near מקוה ישראל MIKVEH YISRAEL. The day's record also includes repeated attacks on medical transport and competing reports of immigration. These are separate episodes, not components of one casualty total.
What did the train bombing kill and destroy?
The official statement places the explosion at about 08:40 on 29 February. Three rear coaches carrying military personnel were destroyed; the next day's official count was twenty-seven dead and thirty-five wounded. JTA and the UN press summary gave different early figures. The full account, לח״י LEḤI bombed military coaches near רחובות REḪOVOT., preserves the contradictory date in the official covering letter and the more specific date in its enclosure.1 2
The claim of reprisal for the massacre on רחוב בן יהודה BEN YEHUDA STREET did not establish that the soldiers aboard had perpetrated it. Institutional and press opposition to the bombing also matters when distinguishing לח״י LEḤI's actions from the policy of national institutions.
What happened to the disarmed men at the factory?
Official memorials describe a weapons search by imperial soldiers, their departure and an Arab attack on the men left behind. Counts of nine, ten and eleven appear in different source chains. Murder of disarmed defenders and workers at בית חרושת היוצק HAYOTZEK FACTORY. separates those accounts and the accusation of imperial complicity from proof of prior coordination.3 4
One victim, ישראל צ׳כנוביץ YISRAʾEL TSEKHNOVITZ, had survived השואה HAʾŜOA (the Holocaust) after the deaths of his father and sister; his mother had died earlier. The memorial identifies him as the last survivor of his immediate family, while also naming surviving uncles. That specific family history should not become a claim that he had no surviving relatives anywhere.
How was the medical road attacked?
הדסה HADASSAH's later submission records a mine found at 07:30 and removed by the army, fire at a bus and milk truck at 08:15, and further fire at a bus at 10:15. The timed list supports repeated danger to hospital access, without assigning a death to these particular incidents. The continuing sequence is examined in Attack on הדסה HADASSAH medical transport..5
Can the immigration reports be combined?
The UN summary and JTA report figures of approximately eight hundred and one thousand immigrants. The reporting periods and passengers have not been reconciled. They cannot be added into eighteen hundred arrivals on this day. Their immediate significance is continuing immigration under imperial restrictions while institutions were preparing national independence.6 7
How is this dated?
This is Day 92 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-02-29. Its daytime portion maps to י״ט באדר א׳ ה׳תש״ח 19th 𝑜𝑓 Adar I, AM 5708. After local sunset, the Hebrew date changes to כ׳ באדר א׳ ה׳תש״ח 20th 𝑜𝑓 Adar I, AM 5708. This calendar convention does not prove that every reported act occurred in daylight.
The train statement explicitly gives daylight 29 February, despite its covering letter’s 27 February error. The two memorials date the factory deaths to 29 February and 19 Adar I. The medical incident list gives hours on 29 February; it was submitted on 19 March. Immigration publication dates do not establish a combined arrival count. 8
