דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION reviewed expanding manpower and the material demands of national defense. Contemporary reports also described scientific work at רחובות REḪOVOT, while a mine again endangered the road serving הדסה HADASSAH. Preparing independence required trained people, equipment, food and institutions that could continue operating under attack.
What did the manpower figures measure?
The 1 March diary records manpower figures rising from 10,042 in January to 14,150 in February. These figures document an institutional accounting of mobilization; they are not proof that every counted person was a trained, fully equipped frontline fighter. The diary's discussion of weapons production and coordination makes the distinction consequential.1
Production problems involving submachine guns remained part of the review. Counting people without examining arms and training would overstate readiness. The developing national force depended on matching personnel to usable weapons, command and supply arrangements.
What food planning appears in the diary?
The entry records agricultural and supply estimates, including an annual wheat-or-flour requirement of about one hundred thousand tons and discussion of reserves measured in months. These are planning figures reported in a meeting, not an audited inventory for every household or a finding that famine had begun. They show that the leadership treated the ability to sustain communities as part of defense.2
What did the scientific report establish?
JTA's 1 March bulletin described a pilot desalination plant at the research institute in רחובות REḪOVOT. Publication records the circulation of that account. It does not independently establish that construction, commissioning and successful operation all occurred on 1 March. Water research had practical relevance to settlement and economic capacity, but an announcement is not a completed national water system.3
What continued on the hospital road?
הדסה HADASSAH's dated incident list records a bus encountering a mine on 1 March in the road corridor through الشيخ جراح SHEIKH JARRAH. The incident belongs to the continuing sequence culminating in the grave attack examined in Attack on הדסה HADASSAH medical transport.. It should retain its own occurrence date rather than being moved to the institution's 19 March submission.4
The official parliamentary statement about the previous day's train bombing also circulated on this date. Its report is important evidence for לח״י LEḤI bombed military coaches near רחובות REḪOVOT.; it is not a second bombing.
How is this dated?
This is Day 93 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-03-01. Its daytime portion maps to כ׳ באדר א׳ ה׳תש״ח 20th 𝑜𝑓 Adar I, AM 5708. After local sunset, the Hebrew date changes to כ״א באדר א׳ ה׳תש״ח 21st 𝑜𝑓 Adar I, AM 5708. This calendar convention does not prove that every reported act occurred in daylight.
The diary is explicitly dated 1 March. The pilot-plant bulletin has that publication date, with completion timing unresolved. The medical docket explicitly assigns its mine incident to 1 March. The train explosion occurred on 29 February and was described in the 1 March statement. 5
Guided reflections
- Why is a manpower count insufficient to measure military readiness?
- How did food and water planning contribute to preparation for sovereignty?
