לח״י LEḤI bombed a building in חיפה HAIFA. An editorial in الدفاع AL-DIFAʿ rejected national sovereignty and immigration, while parliamentary reporting described substantial armed infiltration across borders. A named captive's memorial also assigns his death to this date, distinct from the factory killings of 29 February.
What does the evidence show about the bombing?
The UN press summary carries a 3 March dispatch reporting fourteen dead and at least twenty-six wounded. The supplied same-day newspaper account places the bombing in the morning and gives an earlier count of eleven dead and sixteen seriously wounded. The full study, לח״י LEḤI bombed a building in חיפה HAIFA., keeps those counts separate and does not classify every occupant as a fighter merely because a building was alleged to have a military use.1 2
What political program did the editorial express?
The later UN translation of الدفاع AL-DIFAʿ's 3 March editorial presents categorical opposition to a state and further immigration by יהודים YEHUDIM. الدفاع AL-DIFAʿ rejected sovereignty and immigration for יהודים YEHUDIM. examines that antizionist argument and its treatment of an entire national community as a danger. The original Arabic issue has not been inspected; the translation establishes the UN's rendering, not the exact Arabic wording.3
Which captive's death was assigned to this day?
The official memorial of מרדכי מרקו בכר MORDEHAI MARCO BEHAR describes capture near the factory, detention and torture in יפו YAFO, and murder. It assigns 3 March as his determined death date. His body was returned later. Capture, death and recovery therefore must remain separate; he cannot automatically be counted among those killed at the factory on 29 February.4
What did the reports of armed crossings establish?
The parliamentary figure of more than five thousand armed entrants covered a period of months, not a single day's crossing. It is evidence of organized external participation before independence, without turning those irregular forces into the regular national armies of the later invasion phase.5
דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION's diary also records preparations concerning government and naval organization. Discussion of command and institutions did not itself bring a sovereign state or fully functioning navy into existence.6
At 23:00, the medical school and university area came under fire for about an hour, according to הדסה HADASSAH's incident list. That civil-date incident occurred after sunset and belongs to 23 Adar I, the Hebrew date of the following daytime rundown.7
How is this dated?
This is Day 95 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-03-03. Its daytime portion maps to כ״ב באדר א׳ ה׳תש״ח 22nd 𝑜𝑓 Adar I, AM 5708. After local sunset, the Hebrew date changes to כ״ג באדר א׳ ה׳תש״ח 23rd 𝑜𝑓 Adar I, AM 5708. This calendar convention does not prove that every reported act occurred in daylight.
The bombing is reported as occurring on the morning of 3 March. The editorial bears that issue date but survives here through a 2 April translation. The memorial supplies a determined death date, not an inspected contemporaneous death certificate. The 23:00 firing belongs to 23 Adar I after sunset, despite its 3 March civil date. 8

- Why must a determined death date remain distinct from capture and recovery?
- How does a cumulative crossing estimate differ from a single commander’s entry?
