Operation שמואל ŜMUÉL ended in a severe loss for ההגנה HAʾHAGANA north of ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM. Its planned target, the fate of the men and the early allegation about prisoners must be examined separately. Attacks and interruptions also continued on the medical road.
What had the operation been ordered to do?
A surviving orders catalog identifies an intended attack on an Arab passenger bus. The later reconstruction describes nineteen men in the operation, sixteen dead and three survivors. The fuller study, Sixteen fighters died in Operation שמואל ŜMUÉL., distinguishes the objective from claims that the patrol was solely investigating armed concentrations. No verified bus-passenger death follows from the evidence examined.1 2
The scale of the loss mattered to the defense of the northern approaches and to the families whose men did not return. It does not remove the obligation to state the original target accurately.
Why are the prisoner allegations unresolved?
Early reportage gave seventeen deaths and described men killed after capture as an imperial force approached. Another account in the same report gave fifteen deaths in battle. The existing publication Event, News report titled: Arabs Ambush Jewish Patrol, Slay 17 Men, now links to the operation study rather than treating its 5 March issue date as the battle's date.
Those accounts cannot be combined with the later sixteen-person toll. The original survivor statements and nominal casualty register are needed to distinguish death in combat from killing after capture. The allegation remains serious contemporary evidence, not a verified finding of seventeen executions.3
What does the commander's record add?
The official memorial of נועם Grossman NOAM places his death on 4 March and connects him to the operation. His earlier written wishes concerning a contribution for a rifle show personal commitment to collective defense. The document's January date is not evidence that the fatal operation had already been planned then.4
What continued around the hospital?
The medical docket records shooting at workers at 08:00 and police removal of two road obstructions. Telephone communications were interrupted at 22:15. The late-night interruption falls after sunset, on 24 Adar I. The previous civil night's 23:00 firing belongs to this day's Hebrew date but remains a 3 March incident.5 The wider institutional consequences are examined in Attack on הדסה HADASSAH medical transport..
How is this dated?
This is Day 96 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-03-04. Its daytime portion maps to כ״ג באדר א׳ ה׳תש״ח 23rd 𝑜𝑓 Adar I, AM 5708. After local sunset, the Hebrew date changes to כ״ד באדר א׳ ה׳תש״ח 24th 𝑜𝑓 Adar I, AM 5708. This calendar convention does not prove that every reported act occurred in daylight.
The operation is assigned to 4 March by the memorial and the orders reconstruction, while the early dispatch appeared on 5 March. The medical log explicitly dates its incidents; the 22:15 interruption falls on 24 Adar I. The orders date of 2 March and the commander’s earlier January document are not occurrence dates for the battle. 6
