The Security Council adopted Resolution 42, beginning another round of consultation over implementing partition. National institutions meanwhile challenged imperial conduct and the independence of armed organizations. The day's newspaper record also carried consequential allegations about the previous day's fighting.

What did the Security Council decide?

Resolution 42 called for consultation among the permanent members and a report within ten days. It appealed for efforts to prevent or reduce disorder. The full study, The Security Council adopted Resolution 42., distinguishes these adopted provisions from a decision to cancel partition or deploy an international army. Neither followed automatically from this resolution.1

For institutions preparing sovereignty under attack, another consultation period had practical consequences. Its diplomatic meaning nevertheless depends on the actual resolution, not on a later outcome projected backward.

What did national representatives charge?

JTA's 5 March bulletin reported משה שרת MOŜE SHARETT's accusation of cooperation between imperial personnel and Arab attackers in the factory killings. This is evidence of an Agency charge made public by that date. It is not independent confirmation of the alleged coordination. The underlying event is Murder of disarmed defenders and workers at בית חרושת היוצק HAYOTZEK FACTORY..2

Another bulletin reported a warning that the future state's authorities would suppress independent armed action by הארגון HAʾIRGUN and לח״י LEḤI. That statement concerned anticipated state authority, not proof that those organizations had already disbanded or that a unified chain of command existed on 5 March.3

What did readers learn about the lost patrol?

The United Press report published on this date alleged killing after capture in the previous day's operation. News report titled: Arabs Ambush Jewish Patrol, Slay 17 Men preserves its evidentiary role and links Sixteen fighters died in Operation שמואל ŜMUÉL.. Conflicting numbers and mission descriptions make it especially important not to turn the issue date into another battle date.

What remained dangerous on the medical road?

At 17:10, a convoy with a police escort came under heavy fire and an ambulance wheel was punctured, according to הדסה HADASSAH's docket. The presence of an escort did not ensure safe passage. The entry supplies a clock time, but a complete route and escort log remain unavailable.4

The night leading into 6 March also appears in contemporary accounts of فوزي القاوقجي FAWZI AL-QAWUQJI's entry. That chronology is treated in event://5708־12a־25־قاوقجي־entered־palestine־ala QAWUQJI; night and daylight witnesses remain in conflict.

How is this dated?

This is Day 97 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-03-05. Its daytime portion maps to כ״ד באדר א׳ ה׳תש״ח 24th 𝑜𝑓 Adar I, AM 5708. After local sunset, the Hebrew date changes to כ״ה באדר א׳ ה׳תש״ח 25th 𝑜𝑓 Adar I, AM 5708. This calendar convention does not prove that every reported act occurred in daylight.

The resolution was adopted on 5 March. The Agency and armed-organization statements are tied here to their 5 March reportage rather than an unverified speaking hour. The medical entry gives 17:10. The entry during the night of 5–6 March would fall on 25 Adar I after sunset, distinct from the daytime route of this rundown. 5

Guided reflections

  • What did consultation authorize, and what further decisions remained necessary?
  • How does a reported accusation differ from independent corroboration?
