Reports of the Agency bombing's aftermath, military planning and renewed local attacks shaped 14 March. The evidence describes a developing crisis rather than a complete count of deaths occurring on this one day.
What followed the Agency bombing?
JTA's 14 March bulletin reported the burial of thirteen victims and changes affecting consular vehicles. These are aftermath reports about the 11 March bombing, event://5708־12a־30־jewish־agency־bombing. The burial's precise civil date must be established from the dispatch wording and funeral records; publication alone cannot assign it to the fourteenth.1
Security measures responded to the use of a vehicle admitted into the compound. They do not establish that every diplomatic vehicle was involved or that a foreign government had authorized the bombing.
What did the diary record about military preparation?
דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION's 14 March entry records a proposal by a physician from חיפה HAIFA for a force of sixty-one thousand, including attack and defense formations, medical workers, haulers and infrastructure crews. The plan also called for training, transport, fuel, communications and mobile hospitals. A proposal recorded by the national leader is evidence of an option under consideration, not proof that the suggested organization, equipment or force was already operational.2
What attacks appear in the later transcription?
The attributed returns describe damaged houses and a death at Ein Ghazal at about 01:00. They separately describe destruction at municipal buildings in Faluja later that morning, with reported casualties. The original files have not been inspected. Damage to buildings does not by itself establish that a population was expelled or prevented from returning.3
The night leading into 15 March also brought the demolition at الغبية التحتا GHUBAIYA ET-TAHTA, treated in Demolition of homes at الغبية التحتا GHUBAIYA ET-TAHTA.. The source says residents had already left; the cause and sequence of that departure must remain distinct from the later destruction.
How is this dated?
This is Day 106 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-03-14. Its daytime portion maps to ג׳ באדר ב׳ ה׳תש״ח 3rd 𝑜𝑓 Adar II, AM 5708. After local sunset, the Hebrew date changes to ד׳ באדר ב׳ ה׳תש״ח 4th 𝑜𝑓 Adar II, AM 5708. This convention does not establish the hour of an individual event.
Daytime and early-morning 14 March map to 3 Adar II. The night of 14–15 March maps after sunset to 4 Adar II. The JTA issue supplies a reportage date for the bombing aftermath, not necessarily the funeral date. 4
Guided reflections
- How does a force proposed on paper differ from an operational force?
- What additional evidence could establish the funeral date from a delayed dispatch?
