Houses were demolished at الغبية التحتا GHUBAIYA ET-TAHTA during the night of 14–15 March. Leadership discussions on 15 March addressed water, naval preparation and reports from threatened communities. These are different dimensions of the practical struggle to maintain national life.

What happened to the village?

An attributed military return reports fourteen houses destroyed and ten damaged. It states that residents had left earlier. Demolition of homes at الغبية التحتا GHUBAIYA ET-TAHTA. examines the demolition and separates the reported departure from any claim of a documented expulsion order. Neither empty houses nor their destruction establishes each household's whereabouts or a later denial of return.1 2

What did the diary say about essential services?

דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION's diary records an estimate of thirty thousand cubic meters in available cisterns for the population of יהודים YEHUDIM in ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM, enough for thirty days at ten liters per person daily. Further capacity depended on repairs, cleaning and construction; the proposed total was not all immediately available. The same entry discusses a naval service whose tasks extended beyond immigration to transport, coastal operations and civilian protection. These subjects concerned the means to sustain communities and move people and supplies, not only battlefield strength. Proposed measures and resource discussions must remain distinguishable from completed deliveries or operating forces.3

The same entry records a delegation's report that most residents among יהודים YEHUDIM had fled the older inner part of טבריה TEVERIYA, while outer neighborhoods remained inhabited. The delegation described gunfire and road insecurity. It is a received report rather than a household register. It does not independently establish the number leaving, every cause, or whether departure was temporary.

What did the weekend casualty bulletin establish?

JTA's 15 March report gave totals spanning several incidents and the weekend. Its account of الحسينية AL-HUSAYNIYYA is one witness in the conflict examined in Massacre at الحسينية AL-HUSAYNIYYA.. Those totals cannot be assigned wholesale to 15 March or added to every local estimate.4

Keeping these distinctions allows a daily account to show destruction, flight reports and institutional responses without fabricating a verified tally that the surviving evidence cannot supply.

How is this dated?

This is Day 107 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-03-15. Its daytime portion maps to ד׳ באדר ב׳ ה׳תש״ח 4th 𝑜𝑓 Adar II, AM 5708. After local sunset, the Hebrew date changes to ה׳ באדר ב׳ ה׳תש״ח 5th 𝑜𝑓 Adar II, AM 5708. This convention does not establish the hour of an individual event.

The village operation spans the night of 14–15 March, after sunset on 4 Adar II. The diary is dated 15 March. The casualty bulletin reports a wider weekend period; the 16 March demolition article is later reportage. 5

Guided reflections

  • Why must existing water reserves be separated from proposed storage capacity?
  • What distinguishes localized flight from evacuation of an entire city?
