An arms convoy exploded during an interception near קריית מוצקין KIRYAT MOTZKIN on 17 March. The day also followed a reported second attack on الحسينية AL-HUSAYNIYYA, while truce conditions and threats to medical access appeared in public accounts.

What happened near
קריית מוצקין KIRYAT MOTZKIN?

The later military history places the convoy interception at about 15:30. עמנואל Landau EMANUEL and נועם פסמניק NOAM PASMANIK died. Contemporary accounts and later histories disagree over the wider toll. Attack on an arms convoy near קריית מוצקין KIRYAT MOTZKIN. preserves the named lives, the reported arms cargo and the incompatible casualty returns.1 2 3

Neither an arms shipment nor an explosion establishes the status of everyone nearby. Civilian injury claims and the Arab casualties need the same individual verification as the named defenders.

What was reported about the overnight village attack?

The later village history places a second operation during 16–17 March. Its quoted unit claim of more than thirty killed is not an independently checked casualty register. Second attack on الحسينية AL-HUSAYNIYYA. separates it from the first massacre and from later final depopulation.4

What did truce reportage and the medical threat show?

JTA reported conditional willingness to accept a truce, following the late reply examined in הסוכנות היהודית HAʾSOḪNUT HAʾYEHUDIT accepted a truce in principle, with conditions.. The conditions protected security and the proposed state; no completed ceasefire is established.5

The next day's UN press review reported a threat against הדסה HADASSAH made on 17 March, together with an accusation of military use. That accusation remains attributed, not independently proved. The threat helps explain the appeal examined in הדסה HADASSAH appealed for protection of its medical center..6

Negotiation, armed interception and the protection of medical care were simultaneous demands, rather than sequential stages in which diplomacy had replaced fighting.

How is this dated?

This is Day 109 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-03-17. Its daytime portion maps to ו׳ באדר ב׳ ה׳תש״ח 6th 𝑜𝑓 Adar II, AM 5708. After local sunset, the Hebrew date changes to ז׳ באדר ב׳ ה׳תש״ח 7th 𝑜𝑓 Adar II, AM 5708. This convention does not establish the hour of an individual event.

The convoy attack at about 15:30 falls on 6 Adar II. The preceding night’s village operation also falls on that Hebrew date. The truce reply occurred late on civil 16 March, while its public report appeared on 17 March. The medical threat is reported retrospectively on 18 March. 7

Guided reflections

  • How should memorial dates and conflicting casualty returns be reconciled?
  • What evidence would test the military-use allegation against the medical center?
