George Marshall defended the new American trusteeship policy on 20 March 1948. In ארץ ישראל EREẒ YISRAʾEL, דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION heard news of the reversal, prepared a response and pressed editors to oppose it. The struggle over independence was entering newspapers, party meetings and family mourning at the same time.

What did Marshall say had been approved?

At a press conference in Los Angeles, Marshall said he had recommended the policy to Truman and the president had approved it. He described trusteeship as temporary. The diplomatic collection preserves the remarks through their later publication in the Department of State Bulletin on 28 March. The United States proposed temporary UN trusteeship for ארץ ישראל EREẒ YISRAʾEL. examines the separate dispute over the announcement's wording and authorization.1

A meeting between American and imperial officials also took place on 20 March, but the identified memorandum was written on 27 March. A document's filing date must not manufacture a second meeting.2

How did the leadership respond?

The diary records a press release, a party meeting diverted to the new crisis and an evening discussion with newspaper editors. דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION regarded the proposal as a danger to independence and demanded a strong public response. This is evidence of his analysis and political action, rather than proof that every feared consequence of trusteeship had already occurred.3

The same entry records a visit to the bereaved parents of אלי בן צבי ELI BEN ẒVI, killed at בית קשת BEIT KESHET earlier in March. The father discussed public affairs through grief; the family had returned from the funeral. The visit belongs to this day, while the death belongs to the earlier battle. The diary's account of the final moments remains a family belief, not an independently established eyewitness finding.

What can this day’s record establish?

Public advocacy and recorded meetings are events even when a new local battle cannot be independently assigned to the date. This day's sources establish political decisions and mourning. They do not establish zero casualties throughout ארץ ישראל EREẒ YISRAʾEL, nor justify borrowing deaths from an earlier engagement to fill a daily total.

How is this dated?

This is Day 112 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-03-20. Its daytime portion maps to ט׳ באדר ב׳ ה׳תש״ח 9th 𝑜𝑓 Adar II, AM 5708. After local sunset the Hebrew date changes to י׳ באדר ב׳ ה׳תש״ח 10th 𝑜𝑓 Adar II, AM 5708. The daily route does not assign every reported incident to that Hebrew date.

The press conference and diary explicitly bear 20 March, whose daytime maps to 9 Adar II. The diary labels the editors’ meeting as evening, so its Hebrew date may be 10 Adar II. The bereavement visit has no verified clock time. The 27 March memorandum and 28 March Bulletin are later documents about 20 March actions.4 5

Guided reflections

  • Why is a political response an event even without a newly established battle that day?
  • How does a bereavement visit differ in date from the death it mourns?
