Two major convoy disasters began on 27 March 1948. An Arab ambush struck the convoy to יחיעם YEḤIAM, while the convoy returning from גוש עציון GUŜ EẐION became trapped south of בית לחם BEIT LEḤEM. They were separate engagements whose overlapping newspaper totals must remain separate.
What happened on the northern route?
The first vehicle reached יחיעם YEḤIAM, but much of the convoy was caught near الكابري AL-KABRI. The institutional memorial commemorates forty-six dead. Attack on the convoy to יחיעם YEḤIAM. compares the early forty-two and forty-five reports with later forty-six and forty-seven accounts, and preserves the lives of עליזה שיינרמן ALIZA SHEINERMAN and משה שיינרמן MOŜE SHEINERMAN.1 2 3
The siblings' separate birth dates contradict a description of them as twins. The sister's memorial also contains an age-label inconsistency. Neither should be repeated as a settled family fact.
How did the southern convoy become trapped?
After delivery to the settlement bloc, roadblocks and fire stopped the return convoy. Some vehicles turned back; others remained with defenders gathering in a roadside house. Fighting continued through the night and into 28 March. The convoy battle at النبي دانيال NABI DANIEL began. is the single study of that two-day battle.4 5
זרבבל הורוביץ ZERUBAVEL HOROWITZ stayed with wounded men in an isolated vehicle. His decoration's account qualifies the reported final detonation as an inference. The distinction between a reconstructed final moment and direct testimony belongs in the public memory of his courage.6
What was being discussed while the battles developed?
The same-day diary records budget meetings and troubling news from the convoy. It also relays an approach about trusteeship, including a reported threat of blockade. That is a received account in the diary; it does not establish that a new blockade was imposed on 27 March.7
At 18:00, American instructions addressed a proposed truce resolution. They document further diplomatic action, not an agreed ceasefire protecting either convoy. The military and diplomatic events remained concurrent, with no evidence that the draft terms had altered conditions on these roads.8
No combined daily casualty figure can be responsibly made by adding the two battles' changing press returns.
How is this dated?
This is Day 119 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-03-27. Its daytime portion maps to ט״ז באדר ב׳ ה׳תש״ח 16th 𝑜𝑓 Adar II, AM 5708. After local sunset the Hebrew date changes to י״ז באדר ב׳ ה׳תש״ח 17th 𝑜𝑓 Adar II, AM 5708. The daily route does not assign every reported incident to that Hebrew date.
Both convoy battles began in daylight on 27 March, 16 Adar II. The northern escape and southern fighting continued after sunset into 17 Adar II. This daily slot covers their civil-day beginnings; the Nabi Daniel study spans both civil dates. The 18:00 American instruction has its own local sunset question and is not assigned as a separately dated Event. Reports published 29 March are later reportage.9 10
