Reports issued on 29 March 1948 brought the convoy disasters into public view. They described the ambush in the north and the survivors of the southern battle. The loss of men and transport sharpened the danger to יהודים YEHUDIM relying on protected roads. This day's rundown records the reporting and aftermath; it does not invent a new evacuation on the issue date.

What did the northern report reveal?

The JTA bulletin reported 42 deaths after the 27 March ambush near יחיעם YEḤIAM. Later institutional and memorial records give 46, while other early returns differ. The changing estimates belong to the evolving knowledge of one battle. They are not additional deaths occurring on 29 March. The full study is Attack on the convoy to יחיעם YEḤIAM..1 2

When were the southern survivors evacuated?

The same bulletin described men trapped after the النبي دانيال NABI DANIEL convoy attack and a truce arranged through the English Empire. The report's casualty and survivor estimates remain early figures. The dated 28 March diary and the later institutional investigation put the evacuation on 28 March, not 29 March. The supplied batch's proposed 29 March evacuation date is therefore corrected. The complete battle and second-day deaths remain in The convoy battle at النبي دانيال NABI DANIEL began..3

The next day's bulletin gave another survivor count and accused the convoy leadership of disregarding imperial warnings. Such accusations are evidence of the government's public position; they do not independently establish every instruction received or every reason for the return route.4

Why did the reporting matter for the next supply effort?

Convoy transport joined military protection to civilian survival. A report of rescued men did not restore the lost vehicles, weapons or confidence in the road. The impending Attack on the חולדה HULDA convoy. and event://5708־12b־26־operation־נחשון־begins NAHSHON show why command was pressed to secure surrounding ground rather than repeat isolated escorted journeys. Those later events retain their own dates.

No verified new 29 March death total can be extracted by adding these retrospective press figures. Counting a battle again because a new report appeared would erase both chronology and individual identity.

How is this dated?

This is Day 121 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-03-29. Its public slot is the daytime conversion י״ח באדר ב׳ ה׳תש״ח 18th 𝑜𝑓 Adar II, AM 5708, 18 Adar II 5708. It is not a claim that every included incident occurred on that Hebrew day. After local sunset, the date becomes י״ט באדר ב׳ ה׳תש״ח 19th 𝑜𝑓 Adar II, AM 5708. The 29 March issue covers earlier convoy battles and 28 March evacuation; it does not establish a new 29 March evacuation. 5 6

Guided reflections

  • What distinguishes new knowledge of a disaster from a disaster newly occurring that day?
  • Why did rescuing survivors fail to restore a safe supply road?
