A 30 March 1948 bulletin reported that הארגון HAʾIRGUN threatened action against הסוכנות היהודית HAʾSOḪNUT HAʾYEHUDIT unless a provisional government was proclaimed by 31 March. The pressure for sovereignty unfolded alongside fighting, contradictory incident reports and continued imperial diversion of immigrants from ארץ ישראל EREẒ YISRAʾEL.
What did the ultimatum establish?
JTA described a threat of revolution
against the Agency. That is contemporary reporting of an organization's stated pressure, not proof that a revolt occurred or a government was proclaimed by its deadline. The threat reveals a disagreement over authority inside the national movement rather than a single command controlling every armed organization.1
Was Jaffa bombed from the air?
The bulletin described three bombs before dawn, apparently from an aircraft, causing slight damage to a Greek Orthodox school and no reported casualties. But JTA's 31 March account explicitly relayed a government correction: the missiles were three-inch mortar shells. The initial aerial attribution is superseded by that contemporary correction. Neither report conclusively identifies the crew responsible.2 3
What remains uncertain at al-Mughar and Sandala?
The same 30 March issue relayed an imperial communique reporting seven יהודים YEHUDIM dead when an armored vehicle exploded during an attack at al-Mughar, including one woman. The hour, identities and precise incident date remain unverified. It is not a secure 30 March nominal death return.
JTA also described a raid on Sandala last night
, claiming about 30 Arab deaths and ten destroyed houses. The later police transcription cited in the report instead places a Sandala attack on 27–28 March, with a named dead woman and different injuries and damage. Those may be different attacks or a dating and reporting conflict. The original logs must settle that identity before totals or displacement causes are combined.4 5
What happened to the intercepted immigrants?
The bulletin describes 737 passengers transferred at חיפה HAIFA for detention in Cyprus, including 132 children. Arrival there the next morning belongs to The English Empire sent יהודים YEHUDIM to detention in Cyprus.. The transfer is a coercive immigration-control action, distinct from battlefield flight and from the similarly named northern convoy disaster.
How is this dated?
This is Day 122 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-03-30. Its public slot is the daytime conversion י״ט באדר ב׳ ה׳תש״ח 19th 𝑜𝑓 Adar II, AM 5708, 19 Adar II 5708. It is not a claim that every included incident occurred on that Hebrew day. After local sunset, the date becomes כ׳ באדר ב׳ ה׳תש״ח 20th 𝑜𝑓 Adar II, AM 5708. Issue 30 March gives predawn Jaffa fire, corrected the next day to mortars. Sandala 27–28 versus 29–30 March remains unresolved. 6 7
