On 2 April 1948, wartime supply needs and preparations for the Jerusalem heights unfolded under imperial rule. Reported seizure of flour trucks, named injuries in צפת ẒEFAT and the late departure toward القسطل AL-QASTAL belong to distinct incidents with different timing and evidentiary limits.

Who seized the flour trucks?

A later transcription attributed to CO 537/3857 reports that armed יהודים YEHUDIM stopped two imperial military Leyland trucks near Beit Hakerem at 14:30, removed their crews, seized weapons and drove away the flour loads. A military entry attributed to WO 261/574 names הארגון HAʾIRGUN in a theft of two loads at רוממה ROMEMA. The descriptions probably concern one episode, but the original records must establish that identification and organization.1

The supply crisis gives the seizure a concrete context. It does not establish where the flour went. דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION's 5 April diary mentions 125 tons seized and distributed by dissidents; that larger quantity cannot simply be identified with these two trucks.2

Which wounded people reached the hospital?

The transcribed 10:55 hospital entry names Aishab Khalil Mafadis,20, Mahmoud el Bastouni,32, and Ibrahim Said,8. The child's civilian status must remain visible. The report does not establish the combatant status of either adult or identify the shooter. A later 11:25 firing incident and imperial response cannot be assumed to have caused injuries already reported earlier that morning.3

When did the force leave for the hill?

The supplied 8 April field report dates departure from קריית ענבים KIRYAT ANAVIM to 23:00 on 2 April. The פלמ״ח PALMAḤ captured القسطل AL-QASTAL. was captured after midnight on 3 April. Those are different civil dates within the same Hebrew day beginning at sunset on 2 April. The report's reproduced page remains uninspected, while the institutional account independently confirms the night leading into 3 April.4 5

What did the imperial departure notice announce?

The 2 April JTA text reports an instruction for imperial civilians and officials to leave ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM by 15 April, with a smaller contingent remaining. That is a prospective instruction, not an accomplished departure by 2 April. The original notice and list of recipients remain needed.6

How is this dated?

This is Day 125 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-04-02. Its public slot is the daytime conversion כ״ב באדר ב׳ ה׳תש״ח 22nd 𝑜𝑓 Adar II, AM 5708, 22 Adar II 5708. It is not a claim that every included incident occurred on that Hebrew day. After local sunset, the date becomes כ״ג באדר ב׳ ה׳תש״ח 23rd 𝑜𝑓 Adar II, AM 5708. The 23:00 departure on 2 April belongs to 23 Adar II; capture after midnight remains on that Hebrew date, despite the civil-day change. 7 8

Guided reflections

  • What would establish where seized flour was distributed?
  • How can two civil dates belong to one after-sunset military operation?
