Arab antizionist forces opened a major artillery assault on משמר העמק MISHMAR HAEMEK on 4 April 1948. The defenders of ההגנה HAʾHAGANA resisted while reinforcements and civilian protection were arranged. In the Jerusalem corridor, a convoy remained trapped in a prolonged effort to get through.

Who attacked the settlement?

The Arab antizionist forces attacked משמר העמק MISHMAR HAEMEK. involved named Arab Liberation Army formations and local fighters commanded by فوزي القاوقجي FAWZI AL-QAWUQJI. Kabha's Arabic scholarship and the institutional battle history agree on the 4 April opening. They describe heavy weapons and a ground assault. The force's foreign officers and volunteers do not place this pre-independence battle in the later interstate invasion phase.1 2

How did the defenders protect civilians?

Shelling endangered homes, animals and defensive works. Children were sheltered, and accounts place women and children's removal at different points during the opening pauses and 5 April truce. Reinforcements arrived during the night. Temporary evacuation for safety is distinct from permanent abandonment; no nominal opening-day evacuation count has been established.

The fuller study preserves the difference between Kabha's early-removal account and the institutional chronology's emphasis on the 5 April local truce. Neither account gives permission to place every departure on 4 April.

What was happening to the Jerusalem convoy?

The 4 April JTA bulletin described more than 70 trucks trying for a third day to reach ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM through باب الواد BAB AL-WAD. It acknowledged restricted information about movements and relayed a claimed 79 Arab deaths in road fighting. That is a belligerent estimate transmitted through the press, not a verified toll. The convoy's identity and relationship to the later successful arrival remain unresolved.3

What did the boundary-fighting report count?

The same issue reported two יהודים YEHUDIM and six Arabs killed at the יפו YAFO–תל אביב TEL AVIV boundary, with further serious injuries. Without named records and occurrence hours, these remain publication-specific figures. They cannot be added to the artillery battle's casualties or assigned securely in full to this civil day.

How is this dated?

This is Day 127 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-04-04. Its public slot is the daytime conversion כ״ד באדר ב׳ ה׳תש״ח 24th 𝑜𝑓 Adar II, AM 5708, 24 Adar II 5708. It is not a claim that every included incident occurred on that Hebrew day. After local sunset, the date becomes כ״ה באדר ב׳ ה׳תש״ח 25th 𝑜𝑓 Adar II, AM 5708. The afternoon opening uses 24 Adar II; reinforcement and some evacuation continued into 25 Adar II. 4 5

  • How did artillery change the danger to children and homes?
  • Why should temporary evacuation remain distinct from permanent abandonment?
