The battle for the road to ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM reversed sharply on 8 April 1948. Arab forces recovered القسطل AL-QASTAL after their commander, عبد القادر الحسيني ABD AL-QADIR AL-ḤUSAYNI, was killed. The defenders of ההגנה HAʾHAGANA and פלמ״ח PALMAḤ withdrew with heavy losses. The day belongs to the continuing Mandate phase, before the regular-army invasion in May.
Why did the loss of the hill matter?
The position dominated the supply road on which households in ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM depended. A large Arab counterattack followed the preceding night's fighting. The later reconstruction places reinforcements at about 13:30 and collapse around 14:00, with survivors withdrawing toward קריית ענבים KIRYAT ANAVIM. The fuller study, Arab forces retook القسطل AL-QASTAL., preserves the changing control and the evidence for these hours.1
The earlier capture on 3 April was not erased by this defeat, but neither could possession be treated as continuous. National defense required restoring the position and continuing to move supplies, rather than counting an earlier success as permanent security.
What can be said about the dead?
The military history reports 39 defenders killed and 34 wounded. A later briefing to דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION gives a different scope, with 26 deaths at the hill and eight elsewhere. Those are overlapping descriptions, not numbers to add. נחום אריאלי NAḤUM ARIELI and שמעון אלפסי ŜIMʾON ALFASI are named among the dead in the retrospective account.2 3
A remembered covering-retreat instruction attributed to שמעון אלפסי ŜIMʾON ALFASI survives through later memorial tradition. Its wording and moment are not independently fixed by an original log. The deaths can be recorded without turning that recollection into a verified last command.
How was the enemy commander's death dated?
The United States consul's 13 April telegram explicitly places عبد القادر الحسيني ABD AL-QADIR AL-ḤUSAYNI's death on 8 April. A later diary records a secondhand allegation about his being shot after surrender without recognition. That allegation requires witness comparison; the death date is better established than every detail of the killing.4 5
The newspaper issued on 9 April reported the withdrawal. Its issue date does not create another defeat. The next day's recapture is separately treated in ההגנה HAʾHAGANA retook القسطل AL-QASTAL..6
How is this dated?
This is Day 131 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-04-08, counted from 30 November 1947, using the daytime conversion כ״ח באדר ב׳ ה׳תש״ח 28th 𝑜𝑓 Adar II, AM 5708. The route dates the rundown, not every incident mentioned. Occurrence dates, later reportage and retrospective publication are distinguished in each section and linked study. The attack after sunset on 7 April and daylight withdrawal on 8 April share 28 Adar II. Later reporting and the 14 April diary do not change those dates. After sunset on this civil date, the adjacent Hebrew route is כ״ט באדר ב׳ ה׳תש״ח 29th 𝑜𝑓 Adar II, AM 5708; the daily slot does not assign every described act to its daytime route. This uses the fixed Hebrew calendar’s daytime conversion; occurrence precision and sunset alternatives remain as stated.7

- Which claims depend on direct observation, later reconstruction or a transmitted report?
- How does separating occurrence, publication and sunset dates change the account?
