Who departed by sea?
The גלילה GALILA voyage reportedly left Bari for ארץ ישראל EREẒ YISRAʾEL carrying approximately 1,000 refugees of עם ישראל AM YISRAʾEL from the Republic of Austria. Departure was a concrete step toward עלייה ALIYA, not an established arrival. The report’s earlier Eilot voyage has no supplied departure date and is not added to this day’s passenger total.1
What did the Cyprus account claim?
JTA reported Morris Laub’s preceding-day press conference: he said 11,800 former Cyprus detainees arriving in February had been settled despite severe housing pressure. He also cited 40,000 people in transit facilities and a 12,000 increase over three weeks. Those figures have different periods and possible overlap. They cannot be added as unique new arrivals on April 10 or treated as proof that every household had a permanent home.2
What did visas permit without completing?
A separate dispatch reported 500 visas for יהודים YEHUDIM among approximately 900 remaining in Tianjin, with collection required at Shanghai. Relief agencies contemplated chartered transport once applicants reached the port. Visa issuance was not departure, evacuation or successful resettlement. The report does not establish a passenger list for those who ultimately traveled.3
Together these records show how restored sovereignty changed possibilities without instantly resolving transport and housing. A permit, a ship sailing and a family housed were successive forms of progress, each requiring its own date and evidence. No individual last-survivor claim can be recovered from these aggregate reports.
How is this dated?
This daily Event covers the civil-day slot April 10, 1949; the established register’s fixed-calendar daytime conversion is י״א בניסן ה׳תש״ט 11th 𝑜𝑓 Nisan, AM 5709. That route identifies the recap, not the Hebrew occurrence date of every incident. The April 10 report places Galila’s departure today, the Eilot departure earlier and Laub’s press conference yesterday. Neither issue date proves a ship’s arrival or the date every visa was issued. An after-sunset act within this civil slot belongs to י״ב בניסן ה׳תש״ט 12th 𝑜𝑓 Nisan, AM 5709; it is explained beside the relevant source instead of changing the whole recap. 45
Guided reflections
- Which of visa issuance, departure, arrival and housing does each report actually establish?
- Why can overlapping housing figures not become a unique-person total?
