A papal demand for international status in ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM and عبدالله ABDULLAH’s negotiations tested different forms of authority after the armistice.

What did the papal appeal demand?

Pius XII issued Redemptoris Nostri Cruciatus, addressing refugee distress, pilgrimage and Catholic institutions while advocating an internationally guaranteed status for ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM and its surroundings. Religious protection and government over an inhabited city were different propositions. The encyclical asked states and Catholics to act; it did not place the city under a new government.1

What assurances did Abdullah report?

At Shuneh, عبدالله ABDULLAH met ולטר WALTER Eytan, אליהו ששון ELIYAHU SASSON and משה דיין MOŜE DAYAN. Stabler’s next-day telegram reports the king’s account of assurances that affected villagers would remain unmolested and have passage to Arab lines. Such assurances require comparison with village-level outcomes. They do not establish a general right of return, a completed transfer of property or the behavior of every military unit.2

Why did the armistice leave work unfinished?

The military agreement allowed political questions to be pursued without settling them all. The king’s interest in a wider settlement and the pope’s separate proposal show that a pause in fighting did not end competing claims to territory and authority. Neither source supports a new casualty or population-transfer total for this day.

How is this dated?

This daily Event covers the civil-date slot April 15, 1949, Day 503 of 599, using its daytime fixed-Hebrew route ט״ז בניסן ה׳תש״ט 16th 𝑜𝑓 Nisan, AM 5709. The encyclical and Shuneh meeting are April 15; Stabler’s report is April 16. Neither occurrence clock is held. After-sunset incidents belong to the following Hebrew day; this civil-day recap does not override their occurrence dates. 34
