Opponents sought to delay UN admission, while the death of ר׳ מאיר בר-אילן R. MEʾIR BAR-ILAN ended a major career in religious ציונות ẒIYONUT.

What did the admission report establish?

JTA reported an effort to defer admission of מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL until September. The disputes concerned territory, ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM and refugees. This establishes a reported attempt to delay the decision; it does not establish a General Assembly vote accepting delay. The earlier Security Council recommendation and the later admission were separate institutional stages. Precise procedural votes remain tied to official meeting records.1

Why retain the established Bar-Ilan study?

The existing death and career article follows April 17 and explains the original April 18 newspaper dateline in the April 19 bulletin. Its yesterday wording agrees with the near-contemporary yearbook. Reading yesterday against the issue date creates an apparent conflict resolved by the earlier newspaper dateline. His death was not a war casualty; his organizing and rescue advocacy belong to the history of עם ישראל AM YISRAʾEL.2

The unresolved death hour requires a provisional daytime route; the funeral’s catalog date cannot become a second death.

How is this dated?

This daily Event covers the civil-date slot April 17, 1949, Day 505 of 599, using its daytime fixed-Hebrew route י״ח בניסן ה׳תש״ט 18th 𝑜𝑓 Nisan, AM 5709. April 17 is the admission report’s issue day and the selected Bar-Ilan death date. The original April 18 obituary dateline resolves the issue-day confusion; the death hour remains unknown. After-sunset incidents belong to the following Hebrew day; this civil-day recap does not override their occurrence dates. 34

Guided reflections

  • How did ר׳ מאיר בר-אילן R. MEʾIR BAR-ILAN connect religious leadership to sovereignty and rescue?
  • What would establish that an attempt to postpone UN admission succeeded?
